Daggett Digs ASCS SOD From 11th at Merritt

MERRITT, Mich. (July 26, 2008) -- Dustin Daggett from Portland Michigan won Saturday night's Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz feature event at the Merritt Speedway. Daggett started in 11th and dodged several accidents on his way to victory in the Mott Motorsports car.

"The car was perfect for the feature," said Daggett in victory lane. "It was difficult to pass during the heat races, but my Dad, Tom (Daggett), Phil (Mott) and the rest of the crew made some adjustments and we were great for the feature."

Louie Carufel and Tim Champlin started on the front row for the 25-lap feature event. Carufel jumped into the lead with Champlin falling in behind him with Dain Naida in third. Naida and Champlin battled for several laps for second when they nearly made contact in turns three and four. Naida checked up and Gary Fast ended up spinning. Tim Norman had nowhere to go, hit Fast, and flipped in turn four. ASCS SOD point leader Brett Mann was also collected in the incident. Only Mann was able to restart.

Carufel led during the restart while deeper in the pack Daggett wasted no time using the high side to move through the pack. By lap eight he moved past Naida for second and set sail after Carufel. Daggett pulled along Carufel one lap later to challenge for the lead when the caution appeared for Aaron Shaffer 's spin in turn four.

After the restart Daggett moved around the top side of Carufel in turns one and two and took the lead. Daggett continued to open up his advantage when the caution reappeared when Jake Stebner spun coming off turn two. Mann had nowhere to go and slammed into Stebner. John Gall and Joe Bares were also collected in the incident. Mann and Stebner retired from the event while Gall and Bares were able to restart.

The final ten laps Daggett opened up a large lead and drove off to the feature win. Carufel held on for second with Champlin, Naida, and Ryan Grubagh finishing fifth after starting 17th and going to the tail for a tire change early in the feature.

Mann's and Norman's crashes sent shockwaves throughout the Sprints on Dirt point standings. Mann lost the lead to Gregg Dalman in the MAHLE/Clevite Short Track Challenge and his advantage over Ben Rutan in the season long point standings shrunk dramatically. Norman also dropped back several spots in the short track challenge.
