O'Reilly Sprint Bandits Put Wraps on '04 Season at Devil's Bowl
TULSA, Okla. (August 25, 2004) -- The O'Reilly Sprint Bandits will put the finishing touches on the series' inaugural season of racing action at the same place it all began this March, as the season finale takes place at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX, on Saturday night, October 16.
Bixby, Oklahoma's Shane Stewart is the leading candidate to capture the inaugural O'Reilly Sprint Bandits championship, as he carries a 38 point lead over Travis Rilat of Forney, TX, into the finale. Oklahoma drivers Danny Jennings of Norman and Zach Chappell of Talala each enter the season finale with a slight mathematical chance of capturing the championship as well.
The Sprint Bandits will be just one of three Sprint Car series that will crown its champion on October 16 at Devil's Bowl Speedway, as the American Sprint Car Series Sooner vs. Gulf South Region Shootout will complete the 2004 season for both Regional 360-ci tours as well.
Stewart has propelled himself into the O'Reilly Sprint Bandits point lead by virtue of consistent top-five finishes throughout the season. Stewart posted a victory at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway on July 4 and has finished outside the top five only once in eight main events.
While Stewart leads the championship points chase, Rilat and Sammy Swindell top the victory charts with two wins apiece. Swindell swept the season-opening two-day event at Devil's Bowl in March, while Rilat captured Memorial Day weekend victories at US 36 Raceway in Cameron, MO, and Butler County Speedway in Rising City, NE.
In addition to Stewart, Swindell and Rilat, other Sprint Bandits feature winners include Gary Wright (Little Rock's I-30 Speedway), Terry McCarl (Knoxville Raceway) and Wayne Johnson (Tulsa Speedway). Josh Wise topped the May 7 non-points paying USAC vs. Sprint Bandits Wingless Challenge at Memphis Motorsports Park, with Stewart leading the Sprint Bandits forces that evening in third.
While Stewart leads Rilat, Jennings and Chappell into the season finale, Jason Martin of Liberal, KS, rounds out the current top five, with Aaron Berryhill (Broken Arrow, OK), Foster Landon (Collinsville, OK), Wayne Johnson (Mustang, OK), Terry McCarl (Altoona, IA) and Colin Northway (Cedar Rapids, IA) completing the current top ten in points.
The O'Reilly Sprint Bandits inaugural season finale at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX, is slated to get under way at 8:00 p.m.
