MESQUITE, Tex. (October 16, 2004) -- Shane Stewart put the finishing touches on the inaugural O'Reilly Sprint Bandits championship in grand style by notching his second series victory of the year in Saturday night's 30-lap feature at Devil's Bowl Speedway.

Stewart took command on the seventh round when early pacesetter Sammy Swindell exited with mechanical woes then put a punctuation mark on his championship effort by setting a torrid pace to lap all the way up to sixth place.

"This is my first championship, so this is a neat deal," a jubilant Stewart exclaimed in victory lane. "Driving for my Mom and Dad a few years back we tried to win some titles at home but were always chasing Donnie Crawford, so this is pretty special. Emmett Hahn has a great series here and I know Tommie Estes, Jr., has to be about worn out jumping back and forth between this and ASCS, Emmett's got a good bunch of people running this deal."

"My crew did a great job again tonight, and Wesmar's house motor for the Sprint Bandits series head was just awesome, it was just a matter of staying out of trouble going through traffic and we were able to do it," Stewart concluded.

Stewart started the Sprint Bandits season finale from the front row outside, with Swindell on the pole after a second place heat race run and qualifying race win. Swindell jumped into the lead ahead of Stewart, while fifth-starter Gary Wright charged past second row starters Wayne Johnson and Danny Jennings on the opening round to take over third.

Swindell held a ten car-length advantage until his car suddenly lost power exiting turn four on the seventh round, when Stewart took quick advantage to take a lead he would never relinquish.

Stewart's series title was secured when the red flag flew on the ninth round for a turn one tangle that eliminated points runner-up Travis Rilat for the night. Rilat dumped his mount on its side after he and Jason Martin were unable to dodge a spinning Danny Jennings entering turn one. Jennings, who had been running fifth, was done for the night, while Martin rejoined the chase.

After a Rodger Eckhardt spin two rounds later, the final 19 rounds were run in frantic non-stop fashion with Stewart slicing through lapped traffic much of the way. Wright closed to within several car-lengths after 22 rounds before Stewart made one last surge through traffic to take the checkered flag with a comfortable advantage aboard Scott Chilcutt's Wesmar-powered mIn Motorsports Management/Rudeen Racing No. 4m Maxim.

Wright held off a late charge by Wayne Johnson to claim the runner-up slot, with Johnson settling for the show position. Danny Wood raced to a fourth place finish, with Clint Garner rounding out the top five.

Zach Chappell overcame heat and qualifying race mechanical problems to race from 16th to sixth, jumping to third in points, just two markers ahead of Jennings. Seventeenth-starter Sean Walden posted a strong seventh place finish, with 14-starter Chuck Swenson, 13th-starter Tony Bruce, Jr., and Marshall Skinner completing the top ten.

Garner, Jennings and Wright topped heat race action, with Wood, Johnson and Swindell winning the qualifying races.
