TULSA, Okla. (May 21, 2004) -- While Shane Stewart turned in the top passing performance in heat and qualifying race action in this past Saturday night's O'Reilly Sprint Bandits event at Little Rock's I-30 Speedway, Hooks, TX, veteran Gary Wright maintains the lead in the COMP Cams Challenge.
There was no shortage of passing in Saturday night's event at I-30 Speedway, with 132 positions gained over the course of four 10-lap heat races and four 10-lap qualifying races atop the quarter-mile clay oval.
Each position gained in every heat race and qualifying race in O'Reilly Sprint Bandits action over the course of the season will lead one step closer to the COMP Cams Challenge Award, worth $1,000 at the season-ending awards banquet to be held at Harrah's North Kansas City Casino & Hotel on November 6. Five points are awarded for each position gained in heats and qualifiers.
Eventual feature winner Wright raced past nine competitors in heat and qualifying race action at I-30 Speedway, running his season total to 21 cars passed, worth 105 points towards the COMP Cams Challenge title. After winning his heat from the front row outside, current series point leader Stewart of Bixby, OK, charged from tenth to first in his qualifying race after an opening-lap flip, jumping to third in COMP Cams Challenge points with 70 markers.
From Sikeston, MO, Jerrod Hull equaled Wright's passing performance by advancing nine positions on Saturday night, maintaining second in COMP Cams Challenge points with 85 points. Other top movers during the night included Sammy Swindell, Nick Smith and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., each of whom passed eight cars, and Travis Rilat, Aaron Berryhill and Foster Landon, who all passed seven cars.
While Wright, Hull and Stewart occupy the first three slots in the COMP Cams Challenge, Rilat and Swindell are tied for fourth with 55 points, with Berryhill and Landon tied for sixth with 50 points.
The opportunity to accumulate more points toward the COMP Cams Challenge title, as well as the inaugural O'Reilly Sprint Bandits championship, will take place over Memorial Day Weekend as the series takes to ovals in Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska. The series makes its Missouri debut atop US 36 Raceway's fast three-eighths mile on Friday, May 28, before moving on to Iowa's Knoxville Raceway on Saturday, May 29. The weekend wraps up with the series' first stop in Nebraska at Butler County Speedway in Rising City on Sunday night, May 30.
