J.R. Stewart from Bellefontaine, OH took the lead from Dustin Daggett on lap 10 in heavy lapped traffic to claim his first ever Sprints On Dirt feature victory. "The track was nuts!" Stated Stewart in front of the South Buxton capacity crowd. "We had a hard time keeping the front wheels on the ground, but we were able to get through the rough corners a little better than anyone else. We started working lapped traffic, then I saw an opening on the bottom under the 85 car, so I stuffed it in there. My crew, Zach Swisher and Craig Rutan had the car just about perfect. Also, the Craig Rutan Racing Engine under the hood was hittin' hard. I also need to thank my sponsors, Rutan Racing Engines, Jacobs Auto Repair, Signs Of All kinds, and Wild Wolf Motorsports.
Stewart and Daggett would start the A-main on the front row, but at the green it was 20-year old Daggett getting the early lead. Darren Long settled into third, and Dain Naida followed in fourth. The top four would all run nose to tail for the first eight circuits until they encountered heavy lapped traffic. Two laps later as Daggett tried the high side around a back marker, Stewart dove the car down low in turn three under the lapped car. Daggett had a strong run on the top, but Stewart slid up the track and took the position away.
Daggett stayed with Stewart through the traffic, but this allowed the third and fourth place cars of Long and Naida to close in. At the ½ way point, the top four cars were once again nose to tail slicing through the lapped cars. On lap 16, Long drove through the middle of turn one, only to catch the ruts and bicycled allowing Naida to take over third. Then one lap later, as Naida was attempting to pass the lapped car of Wohlfeil, the two made contact in turn one, sending Naida hard into the turn one wall, and then flipping over the banking in turn two. Naida would escape uninjured, but his car was completely destroyed. Wohlfeil also sustained enough damage to end his evening.
The lap 17 restart had Stewart out front, followed by Daggett, Long, Gregg Dalman, and Ben Rutan. Stewart again took off with Daggett in tow. Long in the third position began to put pressure on Daggett, allowing Stewart to increase his lead slightly. Lap 20 had Rutan passing Dalman to take over fourth, but one corner later, Rutan also brought the car up on the right side wheels handing the position back over to Dalman. Up front, Daggett would close the gap on Stewart, but ran out of laps as Stewart grabbed the win, followed by Daggett, Long, Dalman, and Rutan in the top five. Jerry Whitney would come home sixth after a frustrating start in 2003, with Mike Galajda, Bill Johnson, Frank Taylor, and Dean St. Denis rounding out the top ten. Mark Broughman, Whitney, and Naida would win the three heat races.
