Devil's Bowl to Host 2nd Annual ASCS Sooner vs. Gulf South Shootout
TULSA, Okla. (June 14, 2004) 0x2022 The famed Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX, is set to host the 2nd Annual American Sprint Car Series Sooner Region vs. Gulf South Region Shootout this Saturday night.
The drivers of the Love's Travel Stops & Country Stops ASCS Gulf South Region will seek to turn the tables in this year's edition of the Regional Shootout, as the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region claimed victory in last year's inaugural Shootout atop the half-mile clay oval.
Fort Worth's Kevin Ramey topped last year's Sooner vs. Gulf Shootout en route to the 2003 ASCS Sooner Region championship. Ramey made a late pass of Kansas driver Jason Martin to take command, then beat Forney, TX, driver Bob Ewell to the line.
Ramey picked up his first series victory of the year by topping the most recent ASCS Sooner Region event, outdueling Danny Wood at Cowtown Speedway on May 29, to move atop the series 2004 point charts. Ramey's lead is a slim one however, as Oklahoma City's Danny Shouse enters Saturday night's Shootout just four points off the pace. Liberal, KS, shoe Tony Bruce, Jr., enters the event ranked third in Sooner Region points, just two markers ahead of Tulsa's Sean McClelland. Lubbock, TX, rookie candidate Preston Peebles II enters the weekend ranked fifth in points.
The Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores ASCS Gulf South Regional championship points battle is just as fierce, with Todd Johnson of Eunice, LA, entering the weekend with just a two point advantage over Greg Rilat of Texas City, TX. Chris Sweeney of Humble, TX, is a close third with Jerry Bell of Rowlett, TX, and Brad Stokes of Kountze, TX, tied for fourth.
Other top shoes expected for Saturday night's Sooner vs. Gulf South Regional Shootout include Sooner Region reps Danny Jennings, Foster Landon, Brian Harvill, Barry McCord and J.P. Bailey, along with Gulf South Region regulars Scottie McDonald, Brandon Corn, Rick Behr, Tina Creswell, Stephen Chevallier and Larry Howery among others.
More than 30 cars are expected for Saturday night's Shootout, which is set to go green at 8:00 p.m.
Devil's Bowl Speedway is located six miles east of Dallas' I-635 on US 80, then 3 miles south on Lawson Road. For more information, contact the track at 972-222-2421.
