Ramey Rocks in wild ASCS Sooner Region Wingless showdown at CCS
SAPULPA, Okla. (July 19, 2003) - Kevin Ramey etched his name into the American Sprint Car Series record books at Creek County Speedway Saturday night, as he topped the wild 25-lap ASCS Sooner Region Wingless Showdown feature. The event was the series' second-ever non-winged event.
ASCS National Tour regular Matt Clevenger led the field to the green flag on the original start, only to be relegated to the rear when he spun in the first corner, setting the tone for what was to come. After several more attempts to start the race were waved off, two of them for separate flips by Doug Fry and George White, Foster Landon outgunned Ramey to take the early lead.
While Landon set the early pace, Ramey nearly spun and fell to fourth behind Landon, Robert Sellers and Brian Harvill. Ramey battled back to third by the seventh round and joined Landon and Sellers in a spirited battle for the lead. Sellers took the lead away from Landon on the ninth round, with Ramey then utilizing the cushion to race into the lead one round later.
With the lead trio continuing to battle for the lead, Landon and Sellers made contact in turn three on the 15th round, with Sellers spinning to a halt against the turn three wall.
With Ramey holding a slim lead, Roy Larkin moved up to battle Landon for the runner-up slot. As Larkin and Landon swapped second, Ramey raced to the checkered flag aboard the Wells-powered Harvill Industries Eagle with a two car-length advantage over Larkin at the line.
Larkin was disqualified when his mount failed to pass post-race inspection, giving Landon the runner-up finish. Harvill snared the show position, with defending ASCS Sooner Region champion Danny Jennings in fourth.
Chris Partin put an exclamation point on the evening, jumping a tire as the checkered flag flew, flipping wildly into turn one. After flipping across the line in fifth, Partin was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, where he underwent successful knee surgery Sunday morning.
James Shoun came from 22nd to claim sixth, with Larry Carter the final car running at the checkered flag. Kevin Pickard, Daniel Calvert and James Fabian completed the top ten.
