Maier Mauls ASCS Sooner Region at Tulsa
TULSA, Okla. (August 28, 2004) - Garry Lee Maier cashed in on his second American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region triumph of the year by racing to a convincing half-lap victory in Saturday night's 25-lap feature at Tulsa Speedway.
"The race track was good, it has been a long time since I have been to Tulsa," commented Maier after posting the victory aboard Scott Brown's Salina-powered Lubbock Wrecker Service No. 11x Maxim. "It was fast and I could run either the top or the bottom."
While Maier gridded the feature inside the second row, it was polesitter Kevin Ramey outgunning fellow front row starter J.P. Bailey for the lead at the drop of the green flag. Maier disposed of Bailey for the runner-up slot on the second round and quickly set his sights on Ramey.
After a lap four caution for a multi-car tangle in turn one, Maier put the pressure on Ramey for the lead until taking command exiting turn four on the ninth round. Moments later, Ramey coasted to a halt with ignition problems.
Maier took off on the restart and checked out on his rivals, motoring to a half-lap advantage at the stripe despite lapped traffic that came into play after 14 rounds.
Matt Clevenger slipped past Bailey on the 18th round to take over second, only to lose the position on the final round when his motor locked up. Tenth-starter Nick Smith made a late surge to snare the runner-up slot, with 2001 Sooner Region champion Bailey claiming the show position.
Sean McClelland kept his Sooner Region title hopes alive by taking the checkered flag in fourth, with Foster Landon advancing from 12th to round out the top five. Jamie Passmore, Tony Bruce, Jr., Preston Peebles II, Clevenger and Travis Scott completed the top ten.
Aaron Berryhill, Clevenger, Bailey and Maier topped heat race action for the 30-car field, with Abe Sherwood winning the B Main.
