Ramey Knocks off Wood in Cowtown ASCS Sooner Showdown
KENNEDALE, Tex. (May 29, 2004) -- Kevin Ramey notched his first American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region feature triumph of the season by outdueling Danny Wood in an epic battle at Cowtown Speedway Saturday night.
"Traffic played a really big part in that race. I felt we had a pretty good pace when I caught him and passed him," Ramey commented in victory lane. "When I got in lapped traffic, they wouldn't cut me any slack. Of course they are trying to race for positions too and they don't know who is around them. It was a good run."
George White led the field to the green flag, but it was outside front row starter Wood who claimed the early lead when White bobbled in the opening corner. Ramey quickly moved forward, slipping around Skip Wilson and White to take over second on the fourth round.
As heavy lapped traffic came into play on the seventh circuit, Ramey made a daring move to assume command. Wood battled back, with the pair dicing for the lead the rest of the way while racing through traffic.
Wood regained the lead on the 24th round, only to have Ramey return the favor three rounds later. Wood made one last charge for the victory on the final round, but fell just a half car-length short of Ramey's Wells-powered Commercial Music No. 39 Eagle.
"Traffic played a big part, back and forth, back and forth, that is what made it exciting for the fans," Wood commented after the spirited battle. "That was one of the hardest races I ever drove, had a lot of fun. Kevin drove a good race; it doesn't get any better than that, which will bring the people back."
White claimed the show position behind Ramey and Wood, with Stephen Chevallier turning in a strong performance to snare fourth. Matt Clevenger rounded out the top five, with Andy Shouse, Skip Wilson, Eric Winnett, Garry Lee Maier and Sean McClelland.
Chevallier, Winnett, Shouse and Wood claimed heat race victories for the 24-car field, with Brian Harvill scoring a wire-to-wire victory in the B Main.
