McClelland Carries Slim ASCS Sooner Point Lead to Devil's Bowl
TULSA, Okla. (September 22, 2008) -- In his pursuit of a second consecutive American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region championship, Brian McClelland has been in the driver's seat over much of the season.
But, as the series takes to the famed Devil's Bowl Speedway clay oval in Mesquite, TX, on Saturday night, the Tulsa area driver's lead is a precarious one after dwindling to just eleven points over the past weekend.
Nipping at McClelland's heels is Kermit, TX, native Kolt Walker, who held the series lead in the early stages of the season. After some midseason struggles, the west Texas shoe has rebounded to bring McClelland back within striking distance.
Saturday's card at Devil's Bowl is just one of three remaining nights of action for the ASCS Sooner Region in 2008. Following this weekend's action, the series wraps up the season by joining forces with the O'Reilly ASCoT National series on the other side of the DFW metroplex on October 10-11 for the Inaugural Cowtown Sprint Nationals.
While McClelland holds a slim 11-point lead over Walker entering Saturday's card, Oklahoma City's Joe Wood, Jr., is just 75 points off the lead pace despite missing the opening event of the season. Matt Covington of Glenpool, OK, holds down the fourth position in points, with Lawton's Michael Brown rounding out the current top five.
Gary Taylor, sixth in points despite missing several events, picked up a series' best fourth win of the season this past weekend at Creek County Speedway.
Saturday's card, which gets under way at 8:00 p.m., is a makeup of the August 23 event that was rained out.The 0x00bd-mile high-banked Devil's Bowl Speedway clay oval is located six miles east of Dallas' Loop I-635 on US 80, then three miles south on Lawson Road.
