McClelland Scores ASCS Sooner Sweep with Lawton Triumph
LAWTON, Okla. (April 22, 2006) -- It was a true knock-down, drag-out affair in Saturday night's 30-lap American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region feature event at Lawton Speedway, with defending series champion Sean McClelland snaring the win to complete a sweep of the series' weekend racing action.
Although McClelland led in wire-to-wire fashion, the fight for the point was furious with McClelland surviving a lap 23 wheel-banger with two-time series champion Kevin Ramey as the pair diced furiously for the lead just in front of Jason Sides and Trey Robb.
And it didn't end there.
On the cool down lap, McClelland and Ramey once again banged upon one another, with McClelland spinning to a stop in turn four, facing the wrong way and with his dislodged nose wing fifteen feet further down the track than the rest of his mount.
McClelland emerged from his machine and while discarding gloves, helmet and ear plugs, made his way to the front stretch fence, climbed to the flag stand and waved the checkered flag before a large crowd that roared its approval.
"I'm pissed!" an agitated McClelland exclaimed from victory lane. "I've owed Kevin Ramey one for three years now and I wasn't gonna move out of his way, he got what he had coming to him."
Asked about his season plans by track announcer Randy Ward, McClelland whipped the crowd into a frenzy by making it clear that, "Kevin Ramey is gonna run every one of these Sooner Region races, well so am I! Piss on him, I'm gonna win this damn thing!"
After topping Friday night's ASCS Sooner Region feature event in Oklahoma City, McClelland gridded Saturday's main event outside the front row with 13-year-old Robb on the pole. McClelland gunned into the lead on the original start, only to see it waved off when tenth-starter Zach Chappell looped his mount in the first corner and collected J.P. Bailey in the process. Chappell and Bailey were both done for the night.
Robb got the jump on the ensuing restart and led the field into turn one only to slide too high in turn two, allowing McClelland to race into the lead with third-starter Sides staking a claim on second.
After starting fourth, Ramey took third from Robb following a lap four restart after David Wheeler's stoppage in turn three.
Over the next dozen laps, McClelland, Sides, Ramey and Robb distanced themselves from the rest of the field by a straightaway margin before the race's final caution flew for Natalie Sather's turn two spin.
Back under way, Ramey moved to the middle of the track and charged by the low-riding Sides exiting turn four to snare second on the 16th circuit.
Ramey then closed on McClelland and when the leader slipped off the bottom groove exiting turn four on the 23rd lap, Ramey dove to the bottom to snare the lead. The pair made contact, with Ramey's right rear climbing over McClelland's left front. McClelland somehow maintained the lead, while Sides took quick advantage to race into second as Ramey averted disaster and kept himself in contention.
Ramey commented afterward that, "He slid up a little bit there and left an opening. I went for it and he just turned down on me."
After surviving the tangle with Ramey, McClelland encountered lapped traffic on the 27th lap and navigated it perfectly to score the win aboard Wade and Allisha Wisely's Oil Capital Transportation/Messer Construction No. 1 Maxim by a narrow margin in front of Sides.
Ramey settled for the show position, with Robb recording his best ASCS finish to date by finishing fourth. Johnny Miller raced from eleventh to round out the top five.
Sam Hafertepe, Jr., crossed the stripe sixth, with Danny Jennings, 15th-starter Tony Bruce, Jr., 20th-starter Mike Peters and Natalie Sather completing the top ten.
Heat race victories for Saturday night's 37-car field were claimed by Sides, Travis Jenkins, Eric Baldaccini, McClelland and Sather. Gary Owens led the opening eight rounds of the First "B" Main before blowing a driveline, with Bruce, Jr., then taking the win. Jimmy Taylor passed Skip Wilson on the fourth round en route to topping the second "B" Main.
