Ramey reels in ASCS Sooner Region Lawton loot
LAWTON, Okla. (September 20, 2003) - Kevin Ramey became the first repeat winner in the last seven American Sprint Car Series events held at Lawton Speedway by topping Saturday night's 25-lap ASCS Sooner Region feature.
"The car was really good for the first ten laps, but over the last fifteen laps it kept getting looser and looser, I was really having to work it," said Ramey in victory lane. "If the track officials would have opened up one of the reds we could've made it better, but that was the same for everyone I guess. The main thing is the Harvill Industries car was good enough again and we're just two races away from finishing up this championship deal," Ramey concluded after notching his fifth ASCS Sooner Region victory of the year.
After posting an impressive heat race victory, Stephanie Chappell led the feature field to the green flag with Claud Estes alongside. The initial start was waved off when fifth-row starter Foster Landon flipped violently down the frontstretch as the green flag flew. Landon emerged from the wreckage shaken but otherwise uninjured.
After two more false starts, Chappell outgunned Estes to grab the early lead, with fourth-starter Ramey charging into second by the completion of the first lap. Ramey pressed Chappell for the point until the lady hotshoe looped her sprinter entering turn three on the fifth round, collecting third-running Robert Sellers, who tumbled without injury.
Ramey took off on the restart, with Estes fighting off defending series champion Danny Jennings for the runner-up slot. Ramey had slipped away to a half straightaway lead when the caution flew after 17 rounds for Wayne Johnson, who spun in turn two while battling for fourth after rebounding from an earlier incident.
Set for an eight-lap dash to the checkered flag, Estes and Jennings kept the pressure on Ramey. Ramey briefly opened up an advantage when Jennings battled past Estes for second on the 21st round. Jennings reeled in the fleet Ramey and poised himself to challenge Ramey in the closing rounds, but Ramey held on to post a three car-length victory aboard the Wells-powered Harvill Industries Eagle.
Jennings settled for second, with Estes posting a career-best ASCS finish by snaring the show position. Roy Larkin claimed fourth, while Zach Chappell, who was involved in an early fracas, charged from the tail of the field with suspension problems to round out the top five.
Jeff Dodd snared a solid sixth place showing, with Derek Drown, 20th-starter Travis Scott, Brian Harvill and Gary Owens completing the top ten.
Stephanie Chappell, Estes and Larkin topped heat race action. A hard turn four flip in the evening's opening heat race brought an early end to Steve Ochs' night.
