ASCS Sooner Region Rumbles into Lawton
TULSA, Okla. (June 27, 2005) -- In keeping with tradition, the American Bank of Oklahoma American Sprint Car Series Sooner Region will invade Lawton Speedway on Saturday night of this Independence Day holiday weekend.
The series championship points race has developed into a turnpike rivalry of sorts, with Tulsa's Sean McClelland holding a slim 28 point lead over 2002 Sooner Region champion Danny Jennings of Norman, OK.
McClelland returns to the site of his most recent ASCS Sooner Region triumph, as he raced to Lawton Speedway's victory lane on April 30. While the victory marked McClelland's third win of the season in the opening five events, he has been shut out of the winner's circle over the most recent five shows.
Jennings had been whittling away at McClelland's advantage, shaving it to just eight markers prior to this past Saturday night's Cowtown Speedway go in Kennedale, TX. However, a tangle with two-time Sooner Region king Kevin Ramey resulted in a rare DNF for Jennings and allowed McClelland to slip back out to a 28-point lead.
While McClelland and Jennings are set to square off for the ASCS Sooner Region championship over the remaining nine events of the 2005 season, Mustang, OK, shoe Kerry McAlister has climbed to third in points, just ahead of Lubbock, TX, racer Preston Peebles II and Sapulpa, OK, driver Cody Branchcomb.
The balance of the top ten in ASCS Sooner Region points entering Saturday night's event at Lawton Speedway includes Brian McClelland (Tulsa), Foster Landon (Collinsville), J.P. Bailey (Fort Worth, TX), Jason Martin (Liberal, KS) and Derek Cottrell (Fletcher).
Past ASCS Sooner Region feature winners of Lawton Speedway's Firecracker Nationals include Danny Wood (2004), Nick Smith (2003), Foster Landon (2002) and Robert Sellers (2001).
Approximately 30 cars are expected for Saturday night's racing action at Lawton Speedway, which is slated to get under way at 8:30 p.m.
Lawton Speedway is located in Lawton, OK, off I-44 Exit 36, then 2.5 miles west on Lee Boulevard, then 1.4 miles south on Sheridan Road. For more information, contact the track at 580-355-6417.
The 2005 American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region slate consists of 19 events at eight tracks throughout Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Arkansas.
In total, including the O'Reilly ASCS National Tour, the Southern Tour and the Sooner, Gulf South, Rocky Mountain and Midwest Regions, the American Sprint Car Series will sanction more than 100 nights of racing in 2005 at approximately 50 different racetracks throughout at least 16 different states.
