Who will be next Lawton ASCS Winner?
TULSA, Okla. (September 16, 2003) - Six different drivers have visited victory lane in the last six American Sprint Car Series events held atop Lawton Speedway's quarter-mile red clay oval. Which begs the question; will Saturday night's ASCS Sooner Region event at Lawton deliver a seventh consecutive different winner?
Five of the six most recent ASCS winners at Lawton Speedway are expected to be among Saturday night's combatants, including Zach Chappell, Kevin Ramey, Danny Jennings, Nick Smith and Foster Landon. All five have claimed ASCS Sooner Region victories at the competitive track since last season. Gary Wright, who won the June 7 ASCS Speedweek event, is the other winner in the most recent six events.
>From Broken Arrow, OK, Nick Smith topped the most recent event at Lawton Speedway, fending off a late charge from Jennings to post the victory on July 5 in front of a full house. Despite missing three Sooner Region events, Smith is still ranked eighth in points. Smith is also ranked eleventh in O'Reilly ASCS National Tour points.
Kevin Ramey topped this season's first ASCS Sooner Region event hosted by Lawton Speedway. From Ft. Worth, Ramey has notched four Sooner Region triumphs and holds a 104 point lead over defending series champion Jennings as the season nears completion.
Landon, Chappell and Jennings were each victorious in ASCS Sooner Region competition at Lawton Speedway in 2002.
With an off weekend for the O'Reilly ASCS National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and United Trailers, 2001 ASCS National champion Chappell will be on hand to vie for victory honors Saturday night. Chappell is currently a close third in O'Reilly ASCS National Tour points.
Jennings and Landon will also both be aiming for their first series triumph of the season.
While the quintet of Chappell, Ramey, Jennings, Smith and Landon seek to become the first repeat winner in seven races, a number of top contenders hope to extend the streak, including Amarillo's Derek Drown, who topped the series most recent event in West Siloam Springs, OK, on August 31.
Other top contenders expected for Saturday night's racing action include Sooner Region shoes Brian Harvill, Robert Sellers, James Shoun, Roy Larkin, Travis Scott and Stephanie Chappell, all of whom are currently ranked in the top ten in series points.
Saturday's racing is set to get under way at 8:00 p.m. Lawton Speedway is located off I-44 Exit 36, then 2.5 miles west on Lee Boulevard, then 1.5 miles south on Sheridan Road. For more information, contact the track at 580-355-6417.
