Ramey Reels in ASCS Sooner Region Point Lead with OKC Win

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (September 3, 2004) - Defending American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region champion Kevin Ramey moved atop the 2004 Sooner Region point charts by winning Friday night's 25-lap feature at State Fair Speedway.

Ramey chased down early pacesetter Matt Clevenger in lapped traffic on the 12th round en route to capturing his second series triumph of the season aboard Tom Willis' Wells-powered Commercial Music No. 7m Eagle, moving just four points ahead of previous point leader Andy Shouse, who finished 15th.

After advancing from sixth to second in the evening's opening heat race, Clevenger led the feature field to the green flag with 2001 American Sprint Car Series Sooner Region champion J.P. Bailey alongside. Bailey jumped into the lead on the initial start as Clevenger fell to fourth behind fourth-starter Ramey and sixth-starter Sean McClelland, only to have the start negated when Tony Bruce, Jr.'s mount jumped out of gear in turn four.

Clevenger took advantage of the second start, outgunning Bailey for the point, with McClelland racing into third ahead of Ramey on the opening round. Ramey battled back around McClelland for third on the second round, then took second from Bailey the next time around.

After fifth-runner Nick Smith came to a halt in turn four with a cut left rear tire after four rounds, the final 21 circuits were run in non-stop fashion atop the heavy 3/8-mile clay oval.

Clevenger stretched his advantage to eight car-lengths over Ramey and Bailey, as McClelland lost several positions when he hooked the cushion in turns one and two on the sixth round.

Clevenger was in command aboard the Swofford Electric machine until lapped traffic came into play after ten rounds. As Clevenger was mired behind a pair of lapped cars, Ramey quickly closed the gap and charged by on the low side entering turn three on the 12th circuit to take command.

Once in front, Ramey dashed through traffic and amassed a half straightaway lead over Clevenger by the time the checkered flag flew.

"There's a lot of tough competition here," Ramey commented in victory lane. "With Shane Stewart, Danny Wood, Matt (Clevenger) has been tough in Swofford's car, and a lot of other guys, it's tough to win these races, I'm glad we could get this one."

Clevenger held off ninth-starter Shane Stewart over the final rounds to claim the runner-up position, with 17th-starter Foster Landon charging through the field to claim fourth. Bailey rounded out the top five.

Danny Wood raced from 18th to sixth at the stripe, with ASCS Gulf South Region regular Brandon Berryman in seventh. Current State Fair Speedway point leader Larry Neighbors was eighth, while Smith charged back through the field after the early flat tire to snare ninth. Danny Jennings completed the top ten.

Bailey, Jennings, Ramey and McClelland topped heat race action for the 29-car field, with Landon posting a convincing victory in the 12-lap B Main.

Ramey carries his slim four-point advantage over Shouse into Saturday night's American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region action at Ada's Oklahoma Sports Park, which gets under way at 7:30 p.m.
