ASCS Sooner Region vs. Gulf South Shootout Double This Weekend

TULSA, Okla. (July 17, 2006) -- The American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region and the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region have squared off once a year over each of the past three seasons. This year, the stakes have been upped with a pair of Shootout events on tap this Friday and Saturday night.

Friday night, the Gulf South forces take on the Sooner Region shoes for the first time atop the semi-banked, 0x00bc-mile Heart O' Texas Speedway dirt oval in Waco, TX. Then, on Saturday night, it's up to the famed half-mile Devil's Bowl Speedway clay oval in Mesquite, TX, for the Fourth Annual ASCS Gulf South vs. Sooner Region Shootout. Both Shootout events feature a $2,000 winner's share.

Coming off his third ASCS National Tour win of the season this past Saturday night in the ASCS Speedweek finale at Lawton Speedway, Fort Worth's Kevin Ramey looks to be a top contender in both events.

Ramey has swept the opening three editions of the Gulf South vs. Sooner Region Shootout at Devil's Bowl Speedway and has claimed victory honors in two of three ASCS Gulf South Region events contested at Heart O' Texas Speedway.

A two-time ASCS Sooner Region champion, Ramey sits atop both the Sooner and Gulf South Regional win lists with 13 career Sooner Region wins and eleven career Gulf South triumphs, including a July 1 score at Fast Trax Speedway in Chatham, LA.

Vying for a third ASCS Sooner Region title, Ramey enters the weekend third in points behind a pair of drivers that are splitting time between the ASCS National Tour and the Sooner Region: Sean McClelland of Collinsville, OK, and Sam Hafertepe, Jr., of Sunnyvale, TX.

A mere 50 points separate the top three in Sooner Region points, with McClelland 26 markers ahead of Hafertepe and Ramey just 24 more points back in third. Tulsa's Brian McClelland enters the weekend ranked fourth, with former ASCS Sooner Region champion J.P. Bailey of Fort Worth by way of Collinsville rounding out the current top five.

Johnny Miller (Burleson, TX), Jimmy Taylor (Oklahoma City, OK), Dex Eaton (Owasso, OK), Justin Melton (Flower Mound, TX) and Derek Cottrell (Fletcher, OK) round out the current top ten.

In the ASCS Gulf South Region championship points race, Texas City, TX, veteran Greg Rilat leads the way as he chases down his first series title. Rilat holds a 40-point lead over Beaumont, TX, shoe Gary Watson, with defending series champion Ray Allen Kulhanek of Conroe, TX, just 41 more points back in third after a pair of recent triumphs. Lane Whittington of Denham Springs, LA, and Chris Sweeney of Channelview, TX, round out the current top five in ASCS Gulf South points.

The balance of the current top ten in Gulf South points includes Larry Hartwell (Pasadena, TX), Richard Holt (McLeod, TX), Channin Tankersley (Highlands, TX), Stephen Chevallier (Downsville, LA) and Kent Lewis, Jr. (Willis, TX).

Both nights of racing action are slated to get under way at 8:00 p.m.
