SOD loses third event at Ionia Raceway Park
Rain has never been a sprint car racers friend. This has never been more true for the fans in the Ionia, Michigan area who like to watch the 700 horsepower winged sprint cars of the Sprints On Dirt series tear up the 1/2 mile clay oval of Ionia Raceway Park. After three previous attempts to race at the Jeff Chapko prepared facility, the SOD stars had only managed to get one race in. Hometown favorite, Dustin Daggett took the checkers on July 18, 2003 in front of a capacity crowd.
On August 1, the SOD sprinters returned for try number four at IRP. After a brief rain shower before hot laps, track officials began work to once again prepare the track for racing. 28 SOD sprint cars were checked into the pits on the stormy afternoon, with a large crowd on hand that was looking at the sky, as much as the racing action. At 8:30 PM, the track was ready, and hot laps began.
The first headline of the evening, was the second place in points car of Dain Naida scratching for the night with motor problems. At 9:15 PM, the first of four SOD heat races pushed off. Fred Bliss grabbed the B & B Oval Track Supply heat race by checking out on the field. Jason Blonde also showed he would be a force later on in the night by winning the Kear's Speed Shop heat race by nearly a half track advantage over second place. The Goodyear Racing Tire heat race was almost a carbon copy of the second heat as Dustin Daggett blistered the field, and running 8 laps in a time of 2:03.921, averaging laps at 15.490 seconds, or 116.204 MPH around the 1/2 mile oval. Dave Fox also raised some eyebrows with his win in the Brodix Cylinder heads heat race.
Back at SOD headquarters, the redraw for the A-main was taking place. Jerry Whitney from Fenton, MI drew the number one pill, putting him on the pole. "Just my luck!" Stated Whitney looking up at the sky with thunder and lightening over head. "We have a fast car, we are on the pole, and it is going to rain."
Then at 10:05 PM, the rain would come as the last IMCA modified heat was taking the track. A decision was made that the remainder of the program would not be rescheduled. Up next for the SOD sprinters, the Brodix Tournament of Champions at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, IA. Dustin Daggett, Bill Johnson and Darren Long will make the trip west to carry the SOD banner. The Night Before the Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 9, while the Brodix Tournament of Champions will take place on Sunday August 10.
