Dustin Daggett from Portland, MI showed why he is leading the Sprints On Dirt point standing with only six races to go. After starting in the seventh position, Daggett took the top spot away from Eddie Smith on a lap eight restart. "It feels good to be back in victory lane at Hartford." Stated Daggett. "It has been too long since we won here, we needed this win as a team. This really helps our points run. We have been leading the points for a while, but now we can start racing hard again, rather that point racing."
John Gall would start the 20-lap contest on the pole position with Kyle Poortenga alongside. The duo both had a good start, as they raced side by side down the front chute and in to turn one. Gall would use the bottom of the track, and then slide up in front of Poortenga coming out of turn two. Gall would pace the field early, but local favorite Eddie Smith would quickly close in on the race leader. On lap two, Smith would drive to the high side of Gall, as the savvy veteran Jim Wohlfeil dove to the bottom. The top three would race three wide through turn four as Smith would take the point away from Gall who was trapped in the middle.
On lap four, Dustin Daggett would begin to show his strength as he would take third away from Gall, then one lap later take second from Wohlfiel. As Smith began to approach lapped traffic, Daggett would close in on the back bumper of Smith. On lap eight, the only caution of the evening would show for Corey Bevard who came to a stop on the backstretch. The restart would have Smith leading Daggett, but that would quickly chance in the first corner after the restart as Daggett took to the bottom of the track and drove past Smith.
Daggett would begin to pull away from the field during the middle stages of the race, but the car on the move was Ben Rutan. Lap 10, Rutan would take third away from Wohlfiel and set his sites on Smith for the second position. The late stages of the event, all eyes were on the cars that started in the rear of the field. Dain Naida, and Ronnie Beale were slowly working their way forward. By lap 15, Daggett had built a comfortable lead, and a battle was taking shape for the second position. Smith and Rutan would begin slicing their way through the lapped cars, while racing for position at the same time. On the final lap, Rutan would close in on the back bumper of smith, and dive to the bottom in turn three. Rutan's bid for the second position came to an end as a lapped car had the bottom of the track covered, blocking the line. At the finish, Daggett would take is third win of the season by 15 car lengths over Smith, Rutan, Wohlfiel, and Gregg Dalman in the top five. Fred Bliss, Beale, Naida, Damon Bassett, and Poortenga would round out the top ten.
Poortenga, Daggett, Dalman, and Gall would take the heat races, while Beale took the B-main event. Up next for the SOD sprinters will be the third and final visit to the tacky ¼ mile bullring of Merritt Speedway. Gates open at 4:00 PM, with racing at 7:30 PM.
