Short Track Nationals Combatants to Vie for $20,000 Winner's Share at I-30 Speedway this Weekend
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (October 28, 2003) - While Mother Nature interrupted this past weekend's 16th Annual Team Affiliated Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires finale, leave it to I-30 Speedway and Team Affiliated to turn it into a positive for racers and fans alike. An additional night of qualifying action has been added on Friday night, while Team Affiliated has added $10,000 to Saturday night's purse, with the winner's share bumped from $15,000 to $20,000. The rest of Saturday's top ten finishers will also collect added money in the $1,600-to-start STN finale.
With this past Thursday and Friday night's winners Shane Stewart and Gary Wright, along with runner-up finishers Tim Montgomery and Garry Lee Maier, safely qualified for the STN finale, the remainder of the 79-car field was prepared to fight it out for the remaining feature starting positions on Saturday night before the skies opened up above I-30 Speedway, necessitating the need to utilize the pre-determined rain date.
Racing action resumes this Friday night with a large field of cars expected to battle it out in a full program of racing action for the opportunity to lock themselves into Saturday night's "Pack's Dash for Cash", which will now feature six cars. The remainder of the field will battle for the remaining 14 spots in Saturday night's Short Track Nationals finale in a full program of Heats, C Features and B Features on Saturday night.
Seventy-nine drivers, representing eleven different states and Canada, competed in this past Thursday and Friday night's qualifying action. With more than 200 total combined victories among the field, Stewart held off a late bid from Montgomery, who battled with Cody Branchcomb much of the way for second, to top Thursday night's feature. Wright then took advantage of a late caution to hold on for Friday night's win in front of Garry Lee Maier, who edged Tim Crawley at the line for second.
Several drivers who were unable to compete this past weekend are expected to join this weekend's festivities, including perennial Memphis frontrunner Eddie Gallagher and Oklahoma City hotshoe Larry Neighbors.
Gallagher and Neighbors join a number of top contenders that hope to advance to Saturday night's Dash via a top-two run on Friday night, including O'Reilly ASCS champion Travis Rilat, Knoxville Raceway champion Billy Alley, ASCS Sooner Region champion Kevin Ramey, Zach Chappell, Jerrod Hull, Jesse Hockett and past race winners Tim Crawley, Wayne Johnson, Mike Ward and Pete Butler among others.
General admission for adults is just $10 on Friday night, with Saturday night's finale only $20. Children ages 6-12, when accompanied by an adult, are only $2 on Friday night and $4 on Saturday night.
I-30 Speedway is located seven miles southwest of Little Rock on I-30 to exit 126 (County Line Road), then south to frontage road, then east. Additional information is available at www.i-30speedway.com or by calling the track at 501-455-4567.
