I-30 Speedway's 16th Annual Team Affiliated "Short Track Nationals" Draws Near
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (September 30, 2003) - In just a little over three weeks, many of the nation's top Sprint Car drivers will converge upon Little Rock's I-30 Speedway for the 16th Annual Team Affiliated "Short Track Nationals" presented by Hoosier Tires on Thursday through Saturday, October 23-25. Approximately 100 drivers are expected to battle for the $15,000 winner's share, with $1,600 to start the Saturday night finale.
Competition will be intense as each driver vies to join the prestigious list of past Short Track Nationals champions, which includes California native Paul McMahan, who topped a 92-car field to win last year's edition of the prestigious event. McMahan held off Daryn Pittman, Terry Gray, Shane Stewart and Garry Lee Maier to post the lucrative victory.
Other past winners include Jason Sides (2001), Mike Ward (2000), Tim Crawley (1998), Wayne Johnson (1997), Pete Butler (1996), Terry Gray (1994), John Gerloff (1993) and Gary Wright, the only driver to claim multiple victories (1995 and 1999) since the event became a 360-ci event in 1993.
Steve Kinser (1988, '89 and '91) and Sammy Swindell (1990) claimed early renditions of the Short Track Nationals when it was a 410-ci event. The 1992 finale was rained out.
Qualifying events for the Saturday, October 25, $15,000-to-win Short Track Nationals finale will take place with half the entrants competing on Thursday night and the other half on Friday night. Passing points will be used to determine feature lineups. The top two finishers from each qualifying feature will be locked in for Saturday's "Pack's Dash for Cash", which will determine their feature starting position.
ASCS rules will be in effect, with mufflers mandatory (Schoenfeld 112535-no gutting). The weight rule of 1,300 pounds without the driver will be enforced, and the Hoosier medium/hard spec tire must be used on the right and left rear.
Drivers planning on competing in the 16th Annual Team Affiliated Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires are encouraged to submit their entries as soon as possible. Entry fee is $150 if postmarked by October 14. After that date, the entry fee is $250, with no exceptions. Entry forms may be obtained at www.i-30speedway.com or by calling the track at 501-455-4567.
