Last Lap Heroics Net Montgomery Friday STN Prelim Win

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (October 28, 2005) -- Tim Montgomery, the "Fredericktown Flash", struck in dramatic fashion at Little Rock's I-30 Speedway on Friday night by stealing victory honors from Shane Stewart on the final round to top the second night of qualifying action for the 18th Annual Team Affiliated Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires.

Stewart only thought he was in the clear after outlasting Tim Crawley in a scintillating opening ten rounds, only to have 12th-starter Montgomery surge to the front in the latter stages to assert himself as a leading contender for Saturday night's $15,000 STN prize. Stewart settled for second, with 16-year-old Kevin Swindell taking the third and final lock-in position to Saturday's finale.

"On that last restart, I just couldn't make up my mind," an enthused Montgomery explained in victory lane. "I wasn't sure if I should just play it conservative and try to block Crawley for third or make a run for it. I decided what the heck, we're here to try to win."

After accumulating the most points through heat and qualifying race action, Stewart led the field to the green flag with nemesis and former STN winner Crawley alongside. With Crawley taking to the narrow cushion, Stewart stuck to the low line in the early rounds as the pair raced in side-by-side fashion.

Stewart held a slight advantage for the opening three circuits before Crawley nosed ahead. Crawley held the slightest of leads each time across the stripe the next five rounds before Stewart edged back ahead on the ninth lap, as the young Swindell stalked the lead pair after starting fourth.

Stewart finally escaped Crawley's tenacious grasp on the eleventh round long enough to slide to the high side, with Swindell taking quick advantage by racing past Crawley for second the next time around. Swindell was mounting a charge on the leader when the red flag flew after 14 laps for Lewis Jenkins, Jr., who tumbled off the turn four embankment. Jenkins briefly returned to action with little more than wing damage.

With Stewart and Crawley busily dicing for the lead during the early laps, Montgomery was quietly climbing from his sixth row starting berth into seventh by the time the red flag flew for Jenkins' flip. Montgomery advanced another spot before the green flag flew again as Wayne Johnson surrendered the fifth position with suspected driveline woes.

When action resumed, Stewart set the pace in front of Swindell and Crawley, who was battling to overcome a deflating left rear tire, with Montgomery racing past Pete Butler for fifth on the 16th lap then charging by Brian Brown for fourth a lap later.

On the march, Montgomery took the show position from Crawley on the 19th round and closed in on Stewart and Swindell by the time the race's second and final interruption occurred after 22 laps for Dale Howard's turn four spin.

As Stewart and Swindell worked the low line in the three-lap dash to the checkered flag, Montgomery worked the middle of the track to perfection to race past Swindell for second on the 23rd lap. Montgomery stuck to the middle of the track and pulled alongside Stewart exiting turn four as the white flag flew.

Montgomery nosed ahead of Stewart exiting turn two on the final round and executed the final two turns of the race to perfection to beat Stewart across the finish line by a mere car-length before performing a stylish, celebratory wheelie aboard the Wesmar-powered Donnie Cooper Enterprises No. 01 Maxim down the front stretch on the cool down lap in front of a raucous crowd.

Stewart settled for the runner-up slot aboard Scott Brown's Lubbock Wrecker Service No. 14x entry, with Swindell a close third. Montgomery, Stewart and Swindell will join Thursday night's top three finishers, Daryn Pittman, Jason Johnson and Gary Wright, in Saturday night's Pack's Dash for Cash, which will determine the starting lineup for the first three rows of the $15,000 to win, $1,800 to start STN finale.

Crawley held on to finish fourth for the second night in a row, with Butler rounding out the top five. Brown claimed sixth, with Jan Howard, Nick Smith, Cody Gardner and 19th-starter Tony Bruce, Jr., completing the top ten.

Heat race winners for Friday night's 84-car field were Joey Moughan, Jan Howard, Stewart, A.G. Rains, Mike Ward, Sean McClelland, Wayne Johnson, Joey Montgomery and Ernie Ainsworth. Dex Eaton, Swindell, Travis Rilat and Brad Welborn each scored Last Chance race wins.

Montgomery took command early en route to winning the first Qualifying Race, with Swindell racing from 11th to make a last corner pass of Butler to win the second Qualifying Race. Crawley posted an impressive half-lap victory in the third Qualifying Race, with Kevin Ramey fending off a late bid from Brown to win the fourth and final Qualifying Race.

Skip Wilson took a wild ride off the backstretch in heat race action, but was able to return for his Last Chance Race. The start of the fourth Last Chance race was marred by a wild three-car flip on the front stretch including Josh Lofton, Chris Shirek and Scott Bolden. Lofton and Shirek were both uninjured but done for the night, while Bolden returned to action.

A total of 89 different drivers have competed in the opening two nights of the Short Track Nationals. The 18th Annual Team Affiliated Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires concludes with Saturday night's finale, which is slated to go green at 7:30 p.m.
