Wright Races from 15th to Snare $15K in STN Finale

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (October 30, 2004) -- Gary Wright pocketed $15,000 the hard way at Little Rock's I-30 Speedway Saturday night, charging all the way from the 15th starting slot to win the 17th Annual Team Affiliated Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires 40-lap finale. The triumph marked the accomplished Sprint Car shoe's unprecedented fourth STN win.

Wright assumed the point on the 37th round when pacesetter Sammy Swindell slowed on the backstretch with a broken driveline, just four laps after Shane Stewart flipped out of contention after briefly capturing the lead from Swindell.

"This has to be about my favorite place to race, and everybody is always so good to us here, we do appreciate it," an enthused Wright commented in the I-30 Speedway victory lane that he graces frequently. "I thought we had something for Sammy then I bobbled a time or two there in three and four. I really don't know if we had time to catch him or not, maybe we could have but I'm not sure. But then he broke and it worked out well for us."

While Thursday and Friday preliminary feature winners Lewis Jenkins, Jr., and Swindell, along with runners-up Stewart and Jerrod Hull were locked into the STN finale, 86 additional drivers battled for Saturday night's sixteen remaining starting slots.

Wright had his work cut out for him. While he won the sixth heat race from the pole position, he still missed the cut to the A Main with only the top-ten earners in passing points awarded feature starting berths. Wright then raced his way into the feature by winning the first of three B Mains. Then the charge was on for the Hooks, TX, ace.

As Wright gridded the feature in 15th, Swindell started from the pole position after a convincing victory over Stewart, Hull and Jenkins in the 6-lap Pack's Dash for Cash. Swindell outgunned Stewart to snare the lead at the drop of the green flag, with Hull, Jenkins and sixth-starter Tim Montgomery racing behind the lead duo in the early rounds. Joey Montgomery, who topped the evening's passing points chase by racing from seventh to win his heat race on the final lap, was the race's first casualty when forced pitside with a broken bird-cage just two laps into the race after starting fifth.

With the opening 26 rounds run in frantic non-stop fashion, Swindell held off an ever-present Stewart for the lead. As the pair raced through lapped traffic that came into play after just seven rounds, Stewart closed in on Swindell's rear bumper on several occasions, only to have the veteran slip away to a several car-length advantage.

Meanwhile, Wright was slicing through the stout field, cracking the top ten by the fifth round. Wright had moved up to eighth by then tenth lap, then advanced to sixth five laps later. Wright was still sixth behind Swindell, Stewart, Hull, Tim Montgomery and Jenkins when the race's first caution flew for Darren Stewart's disabled mount in turn four after 26 laps.

Back under way, Wright quickly took fifth from Jenkins, who was desperately forging onward despite a flat left rear tire. Two laps later, Wright picked up another position when Montgomery was squeezed into the front stretch wall while trying to battle past Hull for third, precipitating another caution as eighth-runner Danny Wood and Sam Hafertepe, Jr. were collected in the fracas as well. Montgomery was done for the night, while Wood and Hafertepe rejoined the chase.

Following a caution for Brian Brown's stalled mount on the 30th lap, Stewart turned up the heat on Swindell. Pushing the cushion to its limit, Stewart battled past Swindell to take command as the pair raced off turn four to complete the 32nd round.

Stewart's lead was short-lived however, as he tripped over the perilous cushion in turns one and two and tumbled off the embankment. Attempts were made to repair the machine for further action, but additional gremlins after the car re-fired sent the No. 4m pitside for the night in it's final outing.

Swindell led the way on the restart with a pair of lapped cars between himself and Wright, who had overtaken Hull for position just prior to Stewart's miscue. Wright fought past the lapped cars and was reeling in the leader when Swindell suddenly lost power as he exited turn two on the 37th round, handing the lead to Wright.

Wright charged to the checkered flag unchallenged over the final three rounds to capture the hard-earned victory aboard the Wesmar-powered Southwest Express/The Shop/Richwood Construction No. 9 Maxim.

Hull fought off a resurgent Wood to snare the runner-up position aboard the Wesmar-powered No. 50 Rich DeReu entry, with Wood settling for the show position in the Wells-powered Harvill Industries No. 44 Eagle after starting 19th.

Brian Brown overcame his lap-30 miscue to claim fourth, with Ernie Ainsworth earning an impressive fifth place finish. Jenkins, who replaced his flat left rear tire after Stewart's tumble, was the final car on the lead lap in sixth, with Kelly Kinser, Nick Smith, 16th-starter Derek Drown and 17th-starter Hafertepe completing the top ten.

Heat race victories were claimed by Brown, Jody Roland, Darren Stewart, Ainsworth, Kenny Coke, Wright, Tim Montgomery, Joey Montgomery, Hafertepe and Marshall Skinner.

Jason Johnson, D.J. Masner and Travis Rilat each snared "C" Feature victories, with Wright, Drown and Hafertepe victorious in "B" Main action.

Claud Estes took an easy flip in the evening's opening heat race, while Billy Alley's night ended when he slammed into Josh Higday in turn four and took a tumble in the fifth heat race. Matt Folstad later hooked the turn four cushion and flipped in the first "C" Main. There were no injuries.
