Shane Stewart carries hot hand into Knoxville's ASCS 360 Nationals
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (June 11, 2003) - Fresh off winning the 11th Annual American Sprint Car Series Speedweek championship, Tulsa's Shane Stewart enters this weekend's Knoxville ASCS 360 Nationals as one of the betting favorites to snare the $6000-to-win first prize.
Two nights of competition in the Knoxville ASCS 360 Nationals won't quite satisfy the racing palate of the nation's most active team however, as Shane and the Cox Communications/Brodix/Sander Engineering #4m Sprint Car team will try for a pair of victories Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway by competing in the 410 Sprint division as well.
Shane enters the Knoxville ASCS 360 Nationals having just put the finishing touches on the coveted ASCS Speedweek championship this past Saturday night at Lawton Speedway. Shane ran up front all week, posting two triumphs and finishing in the top five in all six ASCS Speedweek events aboard the Banshee Graphics/Schoenfeld Headers machine against a tough field of competitors.
Among the week's highlights was the first ever hometown victory for Scott Chilcutt's Oklahoma City-based mIn Motorsports Management/Express Transit/Pro Lube Center team at State Fair Speedway on June 1. Utilizing Wesmar power for the night, Shane charged from 14th and motored past younger brother Darren Stewart in the late stages to post his first ASCS Speedweek victory.
Shane and crew chief Rob Hart continued Australian Dave Sharman's well-timed welcome to the team as Shane made it two wins in a row two nights later, leading wire-to-wire as the ASCS made its first ever visit to the new Outlaw Motor Speedway in Muskogee, OK. The victory marked Shane's fourth win of the season in O'Reilly ASCS National Tour competition presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and United Trailers.
With a JR Motorsports powerplant plugged in the B&B Oval Products/HRP Wings Hoosier-shod MCI-chassis for all but the Oklahoma City event, Shane also posted runner-up finishes at Batesville (AR) Speedway on May 30 and Tri-State Speedway on June 4. Shane finished fifth at Riverside Speedway in West Memphis, AR, and put the finishing touches on his ASCS Speedweek title with a fourth place run at Lawton Speedway.
With the ASCS Speedweek championship and three victories in their last eight outings, Shane and the #4m team have hit their stride at the right time. They will try to capture the $6,000 winner's share in this weekend's Knoxville ASCS 360 Nationals as well as the 410 Sprint Car main event at Knoxville on Saturday night.
Already with 30 top-ten runs in 44 nights of racing in fifteen different states from Florida to California and Texas to Wisconsin, Shane and the #4m team will compete in more than 100 events throughout the country this season.
