SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Selinsgrove Speedway officials are making preparations for the historic track's 60th Year Celebration in 2005. The schedule consists of 29 race dates, including the season opener for 410 sprint cars and pro stocks on Fri., March 18 at 8 p.m.
The speedway's annual motorsports show at the Susquehanna Valley Mall, Selinsgrove, will run Sun., Feb. 20 through Sat., Feb. 26. Teams interested in placing their race cars in the show should call 570-523-8420.
A regular show at the track this season will feature the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass 358 sprint cars, MAPCO Machine Shop late models, Salem RV Center/Keller's Auto Body pro stocks and roadrunners.
The season opener for the track's regular four divisions is Sat., March 26 at 6 p.m. The 60th Year Celebration Race is scheduled for Sat., July 16, featuring 30-lap features for both the 358 sprint cars and late models.
The 410 sprint cars will appear three times at the Snyder County oval on March 18 (season opener), July 3 (PA Speedweek) and Sept. 17 (National Open). The United Racing Club sprint cars will compete on July 23.
During the off-season, extensive renovations have been completed at the speedway, including the addition of a 1000-seat aluminum grandstand located adjacent to the covered grandstand. A new multi-level cement lawn chair terrace was also constructed off the first turn of the speedway.
In addition, the half-mile oval was resurfaced with nearly 50 tri-axle dump truck loads of sifted clay and guardrails were replaced or repaired.
The track's very first race occurred on the afternoon of Sat., July 20, 1946. Bill Holland won the 20-lap inaugural event that day, and later went on to win the Indianapolis 500 in 1949.
The speedway closed down for the period 1955-1962. Promoter Bob Richwine reopened the facility in 1963. The 2005 season marks the 43rd consecutive year of automobile racing at the half-mile clay oval under the promotership of Charlie Paige of Middleburg.
The 60th Year Celebration will conclude Nov. 12 with the annual awards banquet at the Wyndham Harrisburg-Hershey. For the latest information, visit selinsgrovespeedway.com.
