FRANEK WINS FIRST OF SEASON IN SELINSGROVE SPRINTS; SCHICK SCORES THIRD LATE MODEL WIN OF SEASON
SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Davie Franek of Lafayette, NJ, drove to his first win of the season at Selinsgrove Speedway Saturday night in the 25-lap sprint car feature.
The win marked the third of his career at the track at the wheel of Guy Howie's No. 19.
Point leader Donnie Schick of Northumberland drove to his third win of the season in the 25-lap late model feature.
The pro stock features were won by Peanut Heintzelman of Troxelville and AJ Stroup of Evandale, while the roadrunner event was won by Keith Bissinger of Orangeville.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present the 2nd Joe Whitcomb Memorial for sprint cars this Saturday, June 18 at 7 p.m. The 30-lap event will pay $1,371 to win and $171 to start to honor the memory of the late driver of the No. 71 sprint car at Selinsgrove Speedway.
Time trials and heats will be the format for qualifying for the sprint cars. Also competing will be the late models, pro stocks and roadrunners. Gates will open at 5 p.m.
Polesitter Todd Reed powered into the lead at the start of the sprint car feature. Reed was chased by sixth-place starter Colby Womer and second-place starter Jen Yinger.
On the sixth lap, several cars made contact on the frontstretch, resulting in a spectacular two-car flip by Yinger and ninth-place starter Jeff Furlong. Both drivers escaped injury.
When the race resumed, Reed continued to lead with Womer and fifth-place starter Davie Franek behind him. On the fifth lap, Franek reeled in Reed and made the winning pass using the inside lane coming off turn four. A circuit later, 12th-place starter Blane Heimbach advanced to second.
The final laps saw Heimbach chased Franek to the checkered flag. Franek was victorious by 2.37 seconds over Heimbach, Jason Shultz, Reed and Womer.
Polesitter Bobby Croop led the first lap of the late model feature. On the second circuit, fifth-place starter Jeff Smith powered by Croop for the lead. At the same time, seventh-place starter Tony Adams advanced to second, only to withdraw from the race on lap four while pacing under caution.
When the race resumed, Smith led Croop, ninth-place starter Jeff Rine and tenth-place starter Donnie Schick. On lap seven, Schick stormed into second and set his sites on Smith. Lap after lap, Schick attempted to pass Smith only to be blocked.
On the 23rd lap, Schick secured the lead with an outside pass by Smith in the second turn and went on to win the race by 1.59 seconds. Eric Hons, Jim Yoder and Rine completed the top five.
In the makeup pro stock feature, polesitter John Schmidt led the first nine laps of the race. On lap ten, fourth-place starter Brad Trump and eighth-place starter Peanut Heintzelman got by Schmidt in turns one and two. Trump set the pace for the next five laps with Heintzelman racing a close second.
At the finish, Heintzelman pulled alongside of Trump and won the race by a mere .25 of a second over Trump, Dan Jensen, Troy Miller and Bill Glass.
In the regularly scheduled pro stock race, polesitter John Schmidt again powered into the early lead. On lap four, sixth-place starter Dan Jensen took the lead from Schmidt. Fifth-place starter AJ Stroup passed Jensen on the tenth lap and went on to win the event by just .91 of a second over Troy Miller, Jensen, Schmidt and AJ Hoffman.
Second-place starter Wendy Swartz led the first lap of the roadrunner feature. Fourth-place starter Keith Bissinger took the lead on lap two and drove away from the field. At the finish, Bissinger was victorious by two seconds over Cory Long, point leader Brad Mitch, Gary Kerstetter and BJ Bohner.
