HODNETT WINS SPRINT CAR THRILLER IN SELINSGROVE OPENER
SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Greg Hodnett of Memphis, Tenn., made a last-lap pass by Todd Shaffer of Millertsown to win the suspenceful 25-lap 410 sprint car season opener Friday night at Selinsgrove Speedway.
Hodnett's ninth career victory at Selinsgrove came at the wheel of the Hamilton Motorsports/Manheim Auto Auction No. 77. The special 410 sprint car event kicked off the track's 60th year celebration.
Peanut Heintzelman of Troxelville won the 15-lap pro stock main event.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present a four division show of Cindy Rowe Auto Glass 358 sprint cars, MAPCO Machine Shop late models, Salem RV Center/Keller's Auto Body pro stocks and Professional Building Systems roadrunners at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 26.
Fourth-place starter Rick Lafferty of Pennington, NJ, led the first lap of the main event before third-place starter Fred Rahmer of Salfordville powered into the first position with a pass on the backstretch on lap two.
Following his domination in last weekend's season opening events at Lincoln and Williams Grove Speedway, Rahmer appeared to be on his way to his third win in a row at the third different track in central Pennsylvania.
Lafferty maintained the runner up position through most the event. It wasn't until the halfway point in the race that fifth-place starter Hodnett advanced to third and became a threat.
The race's first caution flag unfurled on lap 15 when Colby Womer of Mt. Pleasant Mills stopped his racer in turn four.
On the lap 16 restart, Hodnett stormed into second with sixth-place starter Shaffer trailing him into the third position. A circuit later, Hodnett passed Rahmer for the lead using the inside lane entering turn one. The pace was slowed again on lap 19 when Chad Layton of Harrisburg parked his U1 between turns one and two.
On the ensuing restart, Hodnett set the pace with Shaffer, Rahmer, Lafferty and Lance Dewease of Fayetteville behind him. Then Shaffer reeled in Hodnett and made an outside pass for the lead entering turn three on the 20th circuit.
On lap 21, a spectacular crash occurred in the second turn when Keith Kauffman of Mifflintown made contact with Rahmer's car. Following a wild series of flips by Kauffman into the speedway's catch fence, both Kauffman and Rahmer walked away from the crash uninjured.
Following Shaffer in the restart lineup were Hodnett; 15th-place starter Mark Smith of Newville; Lafferty; and 10th-place starter Jeff Shepard of Upperco, MD.
The final four laps were a thrill show as Hodnett raced in Shaffer's shadow. On the final lap, Hodnett made the winning pass using the inside lane on the backstretch. At the checkered flag, Hodnett was victorious by just .44 of a second over Shaffer, Smith, Lafferty and Shepard.
Fourth-place starter Peanut Heintzelman led flag-to-flag for his win in the pro stock feature. Defending track champion Troy Miller of Tower City started the event in the sixth position and advanced to second on lap three.
Heintzelman and Miller raced bumper to bumper for the duration of the event. At the finish, Heintzelman was victorious by 1.63 seconds over Miller, AJ Stroup, Bill Conrad, and Gary Beward.
