Snyder Becomes First Repeat Sprint Car Winner of Season; Rine Takes Fourth Late Model Win of 04
SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Nate Snyder of Halifax became the first repeat sprint car winner of the season at Selinsgrove Speedway in Saturday night's 25-lap feature. For Snyder, at the wheel of his Lisi Schell No. 56, the win marked the second of his career at the Snyder County oval and the third overall in 2004.
The Cindy Rowe Auto Glass sprint cars set a new record for the most consecutive different winners in a single season at nine. The previous record was set in 1983 with eight consecutive different sprint car winners.
Jeff Rine of Danville won his fourth late model feature of the season in the 20-lap main event, while Brad Trump of Newport drove to his first-ever win in the 15-lap pro stock main event. Keith Bissinger of Orangeville was the winner of the 12-lap roadrunner race.
Auto Locator of Mt. Joy sponsored bonus monies to all four feature winners.
Selinsgrove Speedway will hold the Joe Whitcomb Memorial for sprint cars on Saturday, June 19 at 7 p.m. The special tribute event will be a 30-lap feature paying $1,571 to win plus lap monies and contingencies. Also on the program will be late models, pro stocks and roadrunners. Gates will open at 5 p.m.
Polesitter Troy Long led the first lap of the sprint car feature before second-place starter Johnny Smith powered into the lead position. On the fourth circuit, eighth-place starter Nate Snyder made a low pass in turns one and two to get by Smith for the lead. Snyder then stormed away from the field.
Smith maintained the runner up position until the 12th circuit when his motor expired. With the race still under green flag conditions, current point leader Davie Franek, who started 10th, inherited the second position.
Snyder and Franek were navigating their way through lapped traffic until the event's final caution flag unfurled on lap 18. When the race resumed, Franek made a last-ditch effort to catch Snyder, while seventh-place starter Jim Nace advanced to third.
At the finish, Snyder took the checkered flag by .68 of a second over Franek, Nace, Brian Powell and Jason Shultz.
Polesitter Glen Heddings powered into the lead at the start of the late model feature. Heddings was chased by third-place starter Dave Shulski for the first two circuits before Shulski powered into the lead on the third circuit.
Jeff Rine started 10th and moved into second on the seventh lap. The race was stopped on lap eight for a multi-car crash on the backstretch involving Bobby Stokes, Chris Wilkinson, Tony Adams and Heddings. All drivers escaped injury.
When the race resumed, Shulski held off Rine for another lap before Rine made the winning pass with an inside move in turn one on the 10th circuit. Once in front, Rine rocketed away from the field, posting a 6.50 second margin of victory over Shulski, Eric Hons, Brian Cochran and Donnie Schick.
Following several multi-car incidents, original fifth-place starter Nate Kerstetter found himself on the pole position for a restart that netted the completion of the first lap. Kerstetter led the first four laps of the race until mechanical problems caused him to withdraw from the race.
On lap five, original 24th-place starter Brad Trump inherited the lead at this point and was chased by 11th-place starter AJ Stroup. Stroup was in striking distance until he, too, experienced problems with his race car and withdrew from the race.
The final laps saw Trump holding off the challenges of 12th-place starter Troy Miller and ninth-place starter Gary Beward. At the finish, Trump was victorious by just .28 of a second over Miller, Beward, Dan Jensen and Bill Glass.
Second-place starter Matt Keister led the first lap of the roadrunner feature with fourth-place starter Rick Bixlier in pursuit. Bixlier led the second and third laps until sixth-place starter Keith Bissinger took command of the field for the duration of the event. Bixlier was victorious over Brad Mitch, Keister, Cory Long and Jim Niaman.
Roadrunner driver Jeff Baney of Stonington was transported to an area hospital for treatment of an injury sustained in a crash on the backstretch on the first lap of the feature.
