Rick Hench Wins His First Jack Gunn Memorial

Selinsgrove, PA - Rick Hench of Newport pulled his Lasoski Racing - Bobby Strickland Racing #20 sprint car into victory after leading all 30 laps of the $1,500 to win Jack Gunn Memorial.

Chris Wilkinson of Shamokin was able to grab his second win in a row in the 20-lap late model main event. Nate Kerstetter of Liverpool was able to set a 15-lap track record for the pro stocks when he won the non-stop feature. Brad Mitch picked up his second win in a row in the 12-lap roadrunner feature.

HPI (Housing Products Incorporated) of Selinsgrove was the title sponsor for the night. Penn Lyon Homes will sponsor the Saturday, June 5th racing program. Gates open at 5 p.m. Racing action will start at 7 p.m. for the regular divisions of sprint cars, late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners.

Rick Hench drew the pole in the 30-lap Jack Gunn Memorial. Hench took the early lead and pulled away from the rest of the field. Second-place starter Bob Beidleman ran second in the early stages of the event. On lap eight, ninth-place starter Jason Shultz entered the top five. Hench continued to lead over Beidleman and fifth-place starter Davie Franek. On lap 21, the red came out for the first time. Babe Mader flipped in turn two. On the first attempt to restart the race, Ryan Bolhke and Blane Heimbach got together going into turn one. Both cars flipped causing another red flag. When the action did resume, Hench drove out to a comfortable advantage over the rest of the field. Eighth-place starter Nate Snyder started to make his presence known when he entered the top five on lap 21. Then Snyder moved past Beidleman to grab the second position on lap 24. Hench went on to win by 1.43 seconds over Snyder. Jason Shultz, Davie Franek, and 12th-place starter TJ Stutts completed the top five.

The 20-lap late model feature got off to a rough start. Eight cars were involved in a turn four crash at the beginning of the event. Dave Shulski, Glen Heddings, Eric Hons, Donnie Schick, Erick Metzger, Harold Schick, Todd Kiger, and Mike Mort were all involved. Seventeen of the nineteen cars were able to restart the race. Fourth-place starter Chris Wilkinson then started on the outside of the front row due to second-place starter Glen Heddings having to go to the rear of the field. Wilkinson took advantage of the good starting position and took the early lead. On lap five, the caution flag waved for Jeff Rine, Tom Vilello, Tony Adams, and Brian Cochran. All four cars tangled in turn four. The red flag was displayed since the track was blocked. When the racing action continued, Wilkinson drove away from the rest of the field. Fifth-place starter Randall Paxton and polesitter Robbie Smith followed Wilkinson for most of the race. On lap 14, Harold Schick spun in turn three. Wilkinson lead the final six laps to capture his second win in a row. Paxton, Smith, sixth-place starter Brian Cochran, and third-place starter Dave Shulski finished in the top five positions. Cochran and Shulski came from the back of the pack to finish in the top five. They were both involved in early race crashes.

Fourth-place starter Nate Kerstetter powered into the lead at the start of the 15-lap pro stock feature. Sixth-place starter Gerald Kratzer grabbed second and stayed there for the remainder of the event. By the completion of the second lap, 10th-place starter AJ Stroup moved into the third position. Kerstetter went on to win the non-stop race in a time of 6:36.16 seconds. Kratzer, Stroup, ninth-place starter Troy Miller, and seventh- place starter Matt Johnson finished in the top five positions.

Polesitter Tom Brunson led the first two laps of the roadrunner feature. Second-place starter Matt Keister inherited the lead when Brunson pulled into the pits with mechanical problems. Seventh-place starter Brad Mitch then took over the top position on lap six. Mitch went on to win his second feature in a row. Gary Kerstetter moved up from his 15th-starting position to finish second. Rick Bixlier, Matt Keister, and Jim Somers rounded out the top five.
