SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Kevin Nouse of Lewisberry posted his first win of the season for the Zane Highlands Racing Team in the 25-lap sprint car feature Saturday night at Selinsgrove Speedway. The win was the fourth of Nouse's career at the Snyder County oval.
Nouse started the sprint car main event in the second position and took the lead at the drop of the green flag. Nouse was trailed by polesitter Bob Beidleman. The event's first caution flag flew when Larry Kelleher stopped on the frontstretch on lap three.
When the race resumed, Nouse continued to set the pace. Then fifth-place starter Nate Snyder passed Beidleman for second on lap seven. Snyder began to close the gap with race leader Nouse until a caution flag flew for Randy Mausteller and Billy Heltzel, who made contact in turn four on lap 12.
On the restart, Snyder made an inside move for the lead entering turn one, but Nouse was able to stay in front. The action slowed again on lap 14 when Daryl Stimeling stopped in turn three. On the 15th circuit, eighth-place starter Jason Shultz moved into the third position.
The caution flag came out for the final time on lap 18 when Bob Beidleman stopped in turn two with motor trouble. When the race resumed, Nouse was again able to pull away Snyder. Shultz then grabbed second from Snyder with five laps to go.
Shultz started to close the gap on Nouse for the lead but to no avail. Nouse held on for his first win of the 2004 season. Shultz finished .85 of a second behind the winner. Snyder, 10th-place starter Davie Franek, and ninth-place starter Blane Heimbach rounded out the top five.
The sprint car heats were won by Shultz, Nouse, and Ryan Bolhke. The consolation winner was Dave Emory.
Eric Hons of Benton drove to his first win of the season in the 20-lap late model feature. Polesitter Chris Wilkinson took control at the beginning of the event. Second-place starter Hons followed Wilkinson for the first 18 laps before making an inside pass for the lead in turn two. Fourth-place starter Al Shawver Jr. was racing a close third at the time. Hons then went on to win the non-stop feature event, timed in 7:40, just shy of a new track record.
Wilkinson held on for second, while eighth-place starter Jeff Rine moved up to finish third. Seventh-place starter Tony Adams finished fourth and sixth-place starter Donnie Schick finished a solid fifth. Al Shawver Jr.'s good run resulted with a sixth-place finish.
Late model heats were won by Shawver and Schick.
Second-place starter Jason Phillips powered into the lead at the start of the 15-lap pro stock feature and was chased by fourth-place starter Dave Brouse, Jr. On the second circuit, Brouse passed Phillips for the lead. However, on lap three, it was sixth-place starter John Reyan who pulled ahead of the field.
Reyan led the event through the 12th circuit, when third-place starter Nate Kerstetter put in a bid for the lead. Kerstetter made the winning pass using the outside lane exiting turn four on lap 13. The event's final caution flag unfurled on lap 14, setting up a chase to the checkered flag between Kerstetter and Reyan.
Kerstetter held off Reyan and posted a mere .47 of a second victory. Troy Miller, Brad Trump and Dan Jensen completed the top five. Pro stock heats were won by Kerstetter, AJ Stroup, and Meade Hahn.
Several incidents occurred simultaneously on the first lap of the 12-lap roadrunner feature, including a backstretch crash involving Rick Bixilier that required Bixlier to be transported to an area hospital for treatment of a back injury.
Fifth-place starter Jim Somers led the event through lap 23, when sixth-place starter Keith Bissinger took command of the field. Bissinger was challenged by fourth-place starter Chris Eckert to the finish. Bissinger persevered and posted a .97 of a second margin of victory over Eckert, Brad Mitch, Jeff Baney and Jim Niaman.
