SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- 16-year-old Davie Franek of Lafayette, NJ, held off TJ Stutts of Liverpool for his first win of the season in the 25-lap sprint car feature Saturday night at Selinsgrove Speedway.
The win for Franek, the Rookie of the Year in 2003, was the second of his career in 358 sprint car competition at the track. Stutts, who won the season opening event the week before, finished second.
Jeff Rine of Danville wired the field for the win in the 25-lap season opener for late models. The victory was the 18th of Rine's career at Selinsgrove. AJ Stroup of Evandale made it two wins in a row in the 15-lap pro stock feature, while Keith Bissinger of Orangeville was victorious in the 12-lap roadrunner race.
Selinsgrove Speedway returns to racing action this Saturday, April 10 with a four division show of sprint cars, late models, pro stocks and roadrunners at 7 p.m. Track gates will open at 5 p.m.
Polesitter Jeff Weaver took the lead at the start of the sprint car feature. Weaver was chased by second-place starter Davie Franek. On the third circuit, the race was stopped when Dave Emory's car flipped out over the third turn guardrail. Emory escaped injury.
When the race resumed, Weaver and Franek broke away from the pack, with fourth-place starter Kevin Nouse racing third. On lap seven, sixth-place starter TJ Stutts powered into third and set his sites on the leaders.
Franek passed Weaver for the lead in turn three on the ninth circuit. At the same time, Stutts moved by Weaver for second. At the halfway point, Franek held a ten car-length advantage over Stutts, while Nouse, 13th-place starter Nate Snyder and third-place starter Jim Nace competed in the top five.
The leaders eventually encountered heavy traffic ahead of them. Franek and Stutts cautiously thread their way through the traffic. The event's final caution flag unfurled on lap 19, when Weaver spun in turn three and was able to continue.
The final laps saw Franek hold Stutts at bay and go on to post a 1.34 second margin of victory. Nouse, Snyder and Nace completed the top five.
Second-place starter Jeff Rine powered into the lead at the start of the late model feature with second-place starter Scott Haus in close pursuit. Rine and Haus broke away from the field, while third-place starter Jeff Smith and sixth-place starter Dale Kerstetter dueled for third.
Kerstetter secured the third spot on lap six and attempted to reel in the leaders. At the halfway point, the lead trio of Rine, Haus and Kerstetter pulled away from the rest of the field.
The final caution flag waved on lap 21 for debris. On the restart, Haus pressured Rine for the lead. At the same time, ninth-place starter Tony Adams drove by Kerstetter for the third position.
Haus made a last-ditch effort on the final lap entering turn one to get by Rine but to no avail. Rine posted a mere .72 of second margin of victory over Haus, Adams, Kerstetter and Smith.
In the pro stock feature, fourth-place starter Nate Kerstetter passed polesitter and race leader Gary Beward for the lead on the second lap. Then third-place starter Gerald Kratzer raced into second on lap five.
Kerstetter led until the ninth circuit, when his car went up in flames. Kerstetter escaped injury. At this point, Kratzer inherited the lead, only to develop a flat tire while the race was stopped.
These circumstances put Beward back into the lead for the restart. Before the 10th lap was completed, however, seventh-place starter AJ Stroup took the lead. Stroup went on to win the event over Beward, Brad Trump, Todd Snook and Neil Faust.
Fourth-place starter Rick Bixlier led the first three laps of the roadrunner feature until third-place starter Keith Bissinger moved into the leader. Bissinger went on to post the win over Bixlier, Brad Mitch, Jim Somers and Don Scheib.
