Penny Wins $700 Holiday Micro Sprint Special At Selinsgrove Raceway Park,
Nescopeck driver becomes speedways 12th different winner of 2001.

9/2/01, Selinsgrove, Pa -- Shane Penny of Nescopeck proved victorious in Sunday nights 30-lap, Labor Day Micro Sprint Championship at Selinsgrove Raceway Park sponsored by Log Barn, Inc. and Kroft Valley Nursery of Bloomsburg. Penny netted $700 for the triumph, his first of the season at the one-fifth mile Snyder County oval.

Berwick's Nyle Berkes started on the pole and led the first 18-laps of the micro championship before being pressured by Penny after a restart. After running 18 flawless laps, Berkes faltered in the third turn allowing Penny to draw even at the flagstand.

The pair then swooped into turn number one with Berkes on top and the result was contact between the pair that yielded the lead and eventual win to Penny, making him the 12th different micro sprint winner of the season at Selinsgrove Raceway Park.

"I feel terrible for getting into Nyle like that but he was running a good race," said Penny. "He gave me room though and it's tough to get around this place so I took the shot when I had it. I am really glad to have picked up a win here since this track is new!"

Once in front, third starter Penny checked out on the field to record his eighth overall win of the season by more than a straightaway over Berkes, Steve Lenig of Mt. Pleasant Mills, Scott Kishbaugh, Nescopeck; and Todd Hoover, Mt. Pleasant Mills.

Sixth through tenth went to Brian Kishbaugh, Davie Franek, Rick Tanner, Colby Womer and Jason Rice.

Ten-lap heats for the 35-car field went to Scott Kishbaugh, Steve Lenig, Nyle Berkes and Drew Arntz. Bill Puterbaugh and Jason Kemp won twin consolations for the micros.

Randy Smith wired the field from the pole for a win in the 25-lap slingshot feature, besting his son Ryan Smith by nearly a straightaway.

"We've run at a lot of tracks," said the elder Smith upon climbing from his racer. "But this is the nicest track we have ever been on."

Following the Smith family to the line was Joe Funk Jr., Roger Collins and Sean Merkle.

First round qualifying for the slingshots went to Randy Smith and Scott Anbruster while Smith and Rob Alexander claimed second round events.

A.J. Bast executed a winning pass on Colby Womer on the fifth circuit in a 15-lap wingless feature for the micros to close out the program. Bast's win came in the first ever wingless event at the speedway.

Selinsgrove Raceway Park returns to action on Monday, September 3 for a Labor Day go kart special. Adult classes will compete for 60% payback with hot laps scheduled for 10 a.m. Raceway Park then returns for a regular program of micro sprints and go karts on Friday, September 7 at 7 p.m.
