$5,000 Chip Challenge for Firecracker 40 June 29.
6/17/02, Selinsgrove, PA -- The upcoming Firecracker 40 for 358 sprints at Selinsgrove Speedway on June 29 will include a $5,000 Chip Challenge as sponsored by Middleswarth Potato Chips of Middleburg. The announcement was made Monday as part of a strengthening relationship between the speedway and the local snack foods manufacturer that also sponsors the Middleswarth Potato Chips Susquehanna Valley 410 sprint series at the speedway.
Slated to pay $1,500 to win and $250 to start, the Firecracker 40 will come complete with a fireworks display to kick off the tracks July 4 celebrations. The half-mile oval returns to action on July 6 and 7 with the 4th Annual Late Model Open on Saturday and the finale of Pennsylvania Speedweek for Sprint Cars on Sunday as part of the four-date Middleswarth Susquehanna series.
The June 29 Firecracker 40 will offer the driver who earns the pole for the event the opportunity to start at the rear of the field. If he can then zoom to the front from the rear and claim the checkered flag he will pocket the $5,000 payday. If declined by the polesitter, the option to take the challenge will be extended to the outside front row starter.
Sprint car drivers will draw for starting spots in their heat events. Two transfers from the qualifying events will compete in a dash to set the starting lineup at the front of the feature field and determine just who will get the chance to take the challenge.
"This is just another way for us to support local racing and Selinsgrove Speedway," says Middleswarth executive Jeff Goff of Selinsgrove. "We like the direction and initiative that Selinsgrove is taking and it is a pleasure to be involved with our hometown track and to support the 358 drivers as well as the 410's."
Gates for the Firecracker 40 will open at 5 p.m. with hot-laps scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Along with fireworks, additional racing action includes the late model stock cars, pro stocks and roadrunners.
