Rahmer eyes Speedweek and Selinsgrove as potential turning point
6/20/03, Selinsgrove, Pa - The July 6 finale of Pennsylvania Speedweek at Selinsgrove Speedway as part of the 2003 Middleswarth Potato Chips Susquehanna Valley 410 Sprint Series is looming. And there is one man whose record in Selinsgrove speedweek action is unparalleled but who is having by far a less than stellar season as compared to those of recent history.
Fred Rahmer is hoping his good luck in speedweek's past as well as at Selinsgrove Speedway will carry over to this year and point him toward a better second half of 2003. To date, Rahmer has only two wins on the year, instead suffering numerous run-ins with ill fate. Both wins have just occurred within the previous two weeks.
Rahmer, 45-years old of Salfordville, is currently wheeling the Joe Harz owned No. 88H. A look at his past performances in speedweek action at the Snyder County oval and in the series overall gives Rahmer good reason to look toward the series and the Selinsgrove leg for a turning point in his season.
Since the series first visited Selinsgrove in 1992, there have been ten events contested and Rahmer has won half of them including 1993, '95, '97, '99 and in 2000. And when he wasn't winning, he was finishing third in 1994 and 2001 and fifth in 1996.
Along the way, Rahmer established himself as the undisputed king of Pennsylvania Speedweek, racking up six or half of the dozen titles that have been up for grabs since the series inception in 1991. In addition, he is also the leading speedweek series winner with 19 overall checkered flags to his credit in speedweek action.
Rahmer currently sits third on the Selinsgrove Speedway all-time sprint win list with 50 victories -- second only to leaders Ray Tilley and Mitch Smith. He is hoping to add to his numbers at Selinsgrove when the speedweek series climaxes at the oval in two weeks.
Gates for the July 6 Middleswarth Series, 13th Annual Pennsylvania Speedweek Finale open at 5 PM with Time Trials slated for 7. Late Models will join the sprint cars on the card that is raindated for July 7. Sprints will vie for $5,000 in the 30-lap main event.
Middleswarth Potato Chips will give away free potato chips to the first 1,500 fans as they file into the speedway.
The defending speedweek champion, Selinsgrove speedweek finale winner and the 2003 Opperman Memorial champion, Greg Hodnett will sign autographs from 5:30 to 6 PM along with Mark Smith who kicked off the 2003 Middleswarth series with a win on March 28.
