3/23/03, Selinsgrove, PA - In just six days the mighty roar of the 410 sprint cars will again be heard at Selinsgrove Speedway as the oval kicks off the 2003 Middleswarth Potato Chips Susquehanna Valley 410 Sprint Series on Friday night, March 28.

After track officials were forced to cancel the March 22 scheduled season opener for 358 Sprints due to saturated grounds, the powerful 410 sprints will now stage the season opener at the historic oval on Friday night. The 410's will compete in a 25-lap Spring Thaw feature paying $2,500 to win as the first leg of the five-date 2003 series unfolds.

The first event of the series will be a crucial one for all competitors for it is the driver who claims the checkered flag that has the most to gain at the Snyder County oval this season. It will be he who stands the best chance of collecting the $10,000 Chip Challenge in the series as posted by Middleswarth Potato Chips of Middleburg.

Announced in February, the challenge offers the 10G bonus to any driver who can win three of the five scheduled events in the 2003 series. And if the feat is accomplished, on that night one lucky general admission fan will receive $500 courtesy of Middleswarth.

The rare March 28 Friday night half-mile contest will be the first of its kind at the track in over ten years. Darren Eash of Woodbine, Md., came away the winner of the last Friday night competition waged during two-day National Open action on September 18, 1992.

Eash was victorious over his brother Cris, Chuck Reinert, Danny Lasoski and Lance Dewease. The most recent March 28 season opener occurred in 1992 when Dave Calaman proved victorious in 410 action.

Last season, Greg Hodnett of Memphis, Tenn., scored two victories in the four-event Middleswarth Series while Todd Hestor of Middleburg and Lance Dewease of Fayetteville each took one victory. Dewease's triumph came in the season ending National Open when he also claimed the inaugural Chip Series title. All of these drivers will compete in the entire 2003 series.

Also making a much-anticipated return to the speedway on Friday night after missing the final two events of the 2002 series will be 1998, '99 and '00 track champion Todd Shaffer of Millerstown. Shaffer was sidelined from competition late last year due to a leg injury suffered in August at Williams Grove Speedway.

Additional confirmed entries for the first date of the series include Keith Kauffman, Fred Rahmer, Mark Smith, Len Thompson and Chad Layton among others.

Gates for the Friday night special including Pro Stock competition open at 6 PM with practice laps slated for 7:30. Selinsgrove Speedway returns to action on March 29 with its first regular four-division program of the year featuring 358 sprints, late models, pro stocks and roadrunners.
