Dear SCRA Fans,
Okay, it's very late, but here's the SCRA results from the combination USAC-midget/ SCRA-sprint car event at Hanford, CA. The two sanctioning bodies worked together like a well-oiled machine, and the show's events clicked off in rapid fire succession.
Unfortunately, I don't have the official results from the USAC portion of the evening, so I'm not going to speculate on their half of the program. For not getting these results, I apologize. I'm sure they'll be available elsewhere.
But, here's the SCRA results, anyway:
Thirty-three (33) sprint cars checked in for tonight's event. The drivers for both divisions put on a great "thrill-a-minute" show for the 2500-plus fans in attendance on this cool Friday night. The track remained tacky up to final checked flag tonight.
Once again, Ron "The Flyin' Shoe" Shuman took the checkered flag honors tonight, after doing "double-duty" in a midget. In the early going, it looked like J.J. Yeley just might get his first SCRA main event win of his rookie season, but an untimely pair of yellow flags erased a healthy lead he had built up over then-second place Ron Shuman.
At the drop of the checkered flags, it was Shuman, Monte Faccinto, Yeley, Mike Kirby and Ron Di Donato, rounding out the top five place finishers. Unofficially, Shuman's win, coupled with Rip Williams' 6th place finish, appears to have put Shuman back in front of the points battle. Currently, the points chase is shaping up to be a real dandy, and probably will be going down to the wire.
There were several flips during tonight's action, but none of the drivers were seriously hurt, and were well-attended to by one of the best fire/rescue crews at any race track.
The racing machinery didn't fair as well as the drivers, however, and a couple of the cars were going to require extensive repair.
Prior to the start of tonight's racing, USAC media relations expert, Mr. Dick Jordan, was introduced to the crowd. He had obtained some welcome news that Page Jones' condition had been downgraded from critical to serious, with a good prognosis for recovery being predicted by the doctors.
