(LAKE PERRIS, CA - FEBRUARY 6, 2002) Two time USAC National Sprint Car Champion Tony Elliott will be driving for the famed Gardner Motorsports team when the SCRA Sprint Cars, presented by Vista Paint, open the 2002 season at Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday afternoon.

Elliott, who turned 41 on January 24th, won the USAC crown in 1998 and 2000. Last season the Kokomo, Indiana resident took third in the Stoops Freightliner USAC National Sprint Car Series Standings. He notched four wins and finished in the top ten 20 times in 29 starts. Elliott now has 24 lifetime USAC Sprint Car wins which ranks him thirteenth on USAC's all time list. He is just one win shy of Parnelli Jones' lifetime total and only four behind A.J. Foyt.

In driving for Gardner Motorsports, Elliott will be a teammate to Ojai, California's Troy Rutherford who is among the favorites to capture this year's SCRA crown. In 2001, the 28-year old former SCRA rookie of the year finished third in the SCRA standings just 76 points behind 3-time Champion Richard "The Gassman" Griffin. In addition to his lofty finish in the points, Rutherford won 2 main events. He also posted eight fast qualifying times which tied him for first overall with Griffin.

The spectator gates will open at 11:00 AM and the first race will be at 1:30. The pit gate will open at 9:00 AM.

After this weekend's race, The PAS will be in action every Saturday night through November 16th (Easter weekend is set aside as a rain date). On February 16th, two brand new classes make their debuts at The PAS. The new PASSCAR Super Stocks and the Temecula Valley Pipe and Supply Street Stocks will share the spotlight with the California Champ Trucks and the Pick-A-Part Cruisers. On February 23rd, the Pennzoil World of Outlaws will be making their only Southern California appearance of 2002.
