(JUNE 2, 2003) Kid's Month at Perris Auto Speedway gets kicked off with a bang this Saturday night when Temecula Valley Pipe and Supply and Vista Paint present the NAPA Auto Parts/Auto Trader Magazines SCRA Sprint Cars and the California Lightning Sprint Cars on the fast, half-mile clay oval.
All kids 12 and under, who are accompanied by an adult, will be admitted free throughout June. Saturday's kick off to the annual Kid's Month festivities will feature The PAS' top attraction, the SCRA Sprint Cars.
After a week off, SCRA returns to The PAS hot on the heels of one of the best main events in the track's eight-season history. On May 24th, Concord's Damion Gardner and four-time series Champion Richard Griffin, of Silver City, New Mexico, swapped the lead back in forth over the last half of the race in a sensational battle that saw Gardner post his fifth SCRA win of the year.
Soon after his win Gardner, 29, took a red eye flight to Ohio for the USAC Sprint Car race at Eldora Speedway in Ohio the next night. The second year SCRA star posted a 13th place finish in that event in a strange car the first time he had ever been on that track. Last week Gardner's travels took him to Knoxville, Iowa on Saturday where he placed fifth in a Midget race - again in a strange car the first time he had seen the track. On Sunday, he journeyed to Lawrenceburg, Indiana where ended up ninth in another USAC Sprint Car race.
This Saturday, Gardner, who is third in SCRA points and has four wins at The PAS this year, and Ojai's Troy Rutherford, who is second in points, will be back as they try to chase down point leader Griffin. Yorba Linda's Rip Williams and Corona's Steve Ostling round out the top five in the standings (top 20 points standings are listed below).
Like Gardner SCRA President Ron Shuman was in Knoxville, Iowa last weekend. On Saturday Shuman, one of the greatest open wheel drivers of all-time, was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame.
Ontario's Keith Janca heads into Saturday's PAS event as the current point leader in the California Lightning Sprint Cars. The Lightning Sprints are scaled down versions of full-size Sprint Cars with motorcycle engines. Saturday's event will be the Lightning Sprints final tune-up at The PAS before the prestigious June 27-28 Lightning Sprint Car Nationals.
In addition to kids being admitted free in June, all active members of the United States military are admitted free to all PAS events with their military id.
Don't forget that at intermission the entire family can dance in The PAS Dance Contest with prizes for the winning dancers ages 12 and under.
Perris Auto Speedway is the world's premiere clay oval stadium. The fan friendly track features an amazing 60,000-watt digital sound system, daytime bright lighting, a wide variety of delicious food, clean restrooms and paved spectator parking. Best of all, the track supplies clean, wholesome family entertainment every Saturday night.
Advance tickets for Saturday's race are on sale now by calling 1-800-595-4849 or on the Internet at www.tix.com or www.perrisautospeedway.com.
