Wright Wins Again in Little Rock ASCS Action

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (August 28, 2004) - Gary Wright continued his mastery of I-30 Speedway by overtaking early pacesetter Darren Stewart on the ninth round en route to winning Saturday night's 30-lap O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and Classic Trailers feature.

"I'm starting to like this place," Wright commented upon climbing from his winning mount, echoing the sentiment he shared in a Little Rock triumph earlier this season. With his seventh ASCS National triumph of the year and 88th of his career (including eight at Little Rock), Wright has now topped nine of the past 13 major Sprint Car feature events held atop I-30 Speedway's quarter-mile clay oval.

Stewart and Wright led the feature field to the green flag after both drivers won their respective heat races from the fourth starting position. Stewart jumped into the early lead and moved to the cushion, where he fought off Wright's early bids on the low side in turns three and four.

Action was interrupted after five rounds when three-time ASCS National champion Tim Crawley flipped exiting turn four. Three rounds later, the caution flew when Crawley's teammate, Steven Tiner, suffered front-end damage after clipping an infield tire exiting the same turn.

Following the caution for Tiner, Wright dove underneath Stewart entering turn three on the ninth round to take a lead he would never relinquish. Wright stretched his advantage to half a straightaway and was encountering lapped traffic on two occasions when the caution flew.

The yellow lights flickered after 18 rounds when Richard Herring and Bryce Vowan tangled in turn two while battling for eighth, with the final caution flying with just four rounds remaining after A.G. Rains spun in turn four while battling with Lewis Jenkins, Jr., for fifth. Set for a four-lap dash to the checkered flag, Wright had no equal and charged to the stripe unchallenged, completing a weekend sweep aboard the Wesmar-powered Southwest Express/Richwood Construction/The Shop No. 9 Maxim.

Stewart held off defending series champion Travis Rilat to claim the runner-up slot, with Rilat taking the show position. Jenkins battled past defending I-30 Speedway track champion Pete Butler on the final round to claim fourth, with Butler rounding out the top five.

Zach Chappell held off the battling duo of Cody Branchcomb and Toby Brown for sixth. Dueling wheel-to-wheel throughout the feature, Branchcomb edged Brown at the line for seventh. Joe Young turned in his best career ASCS outing by racing from 18th to ninth at the line, with Rick Pringle charging from 20th to complete the top ten.

Tiner, Stewart, Jenkins and Wright topped heat race action for the 32-car field, with Crawley blasting from 14th to first in just four laps to win the 12-lap B Main after suffering a cut right rear tire in a heat race incident. Crawley's feature charge would end early with a battered machine after his frontstretch gymnastics.

The evening's third heat race got off to a rough start when Zach Pringle and Justin Sturch both flipped in the second turn on the opening round while avoiding a spinning car. Both would return for the B Feature, where they were collected in a five-car pileup in turn four as the green flag flew. Sturch continued on, only to miss a transfer to the main event by two positions.
