Rock Springs Double on Tap for ASCS Rocky Mountain Region

TULSA, Okla. (June 9, 2008) -- An intriguing championship battle between a pair of teenage drivers is already taking shape as the American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region embarks upon a two-night stand in Wyoming this weekend.

The series takes to the high-banked, 3/8-mile Sweetwater Speedway clay oval in Rock Springs, WY, for two full nights of action. The top four from Friday night's main event will be locked into Saturday night's finale.

With sixteen different drivers competing in each of the series' opening four events, a pair of teen shoes have risen to the top of the point charts with 17-year-old Derrik Ortega of Albuquerque, NM, holding a mere two-point lead over 19-year-old Chad Corken of Highlands Ranch, CO, entering the weekend.

In his first full season of ASCS Rocky Mountain Region competition, Ortega finished among the to three in the opening three events of the season before posting a seventh-place finish in the series most recent feature on May 31.

Corken, who finished third in series points last year, has finished among the top-five in all four feature events thus far as he celebrated his 19th birthday on May 31 by capturing his top career finish thus far by finishing second to Johnny Herrera.

While Ortega and Corken begin sizing each other up for the title run, 26-points off the lead pace in third is 2004 ASCS Rocky Mountain Region champion Keith Rauch of Thornton, CO. Colt Treharn of Los Lunas, NM, another rookie contender, enters the weekend another four markers back in the fourth position. Treharn celebrated his 18th birthday on the opening day of the recent Aztec Speedway double, May 30.

Brighton, Colorado's Greg Schaefer enters the weekend ranked fifth, while New Castle, Colorado's Bob Schaeffer, who captured his first career series win in the season opener at Olathe, CO, on May 24, is sixth in points.

Edwards, CO, racer Patrick Bourke, the 2006 series champion, enters the weekend ranked seventh, with 16-year-old rookie contender Jake Ossenfort (Rapid City, SD), and the Billings, MT, duo of Jerry Brey and Jeremy McCune completing the top ten in points.

Others that have taken in both of the opening two weekend's of ASCS Rocky Mountain Region action include 19-year-old Danielle Ossenfort (Rapid City, SD), Dustin Hall (West Valley City, UT), Mark Sweet (Rock Springs, WY), Tim Spatzier (Billings, MT), Justin Wolf Medlock (Colorado Springs, CO) and Michelle Dodge (Billings, MT).

Bob Schaeffer and Rauch split the opening weekend of ASCS Rocky Mountain Region action at Thunder Mountain Speedway in Olathe, CO, on May 24-25, while New Mexico's Johnny Herrera swept the Aztec, NM, double on May 30-31.
