DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 25, 2004) - Garry Lee Maier enjoyed a homecoming of sorts by racing to a convincing victory in Sunday night's 30-lap American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region feature at Dodge City Raceway Park.
The lifetime Dodge City-area resident charged past C.J. Johnson on the second round then was in total command throughout, taking the checkered flag with only seven cars on the lead lap despite three interruption over the last half of the event.
"I'm just thankful for the opportunity to race here in Dodge City again, it's been a long time," Maier commented to the partisan crowd in victory lane. "It's been at least ten or twelve years since I've raced here, so this one is special. My entire team did a great job, they gave me an incredible car to drive tonight."
Maier took the green flag from the front row outside, but it was polesitter Johnson who led the feature field off turn two. Maier charged underneath Johnson entering turn one on the second round however to take command for good.
Maier wasted little time checking out on his rivals, leaving Johnson to battle with Eric Miller for second. Miller briefly overtook Johnson for second on the ninth round, only to have Johnson reclaim the position the next time around.
Slicing through lapped traffic with ease, Maier held a half-lap advantage when the red flag flew after 16 rounds for Luke Cranston's turn four tumble. Cranston was uninjured.
Set to get back under way, Maier had four lapped cars between himself and Johnson, with rookie pilot Preston Peebles II in third after racing past Miller on the 15th round. Peebles charged past Johnson for second on the restart, with Johnson hooking a turn three rut and turning over three rounds later. Johnson would return to action after changing a left rear tire.
Peebles started on Maier's rear bumper following Gary Taylor's turn two spin with just five laps remaining. The Lubbock rookie was no match for Maier however over the final five rounds, with Maier racing to the checkered flag with nearly a straightaway advantage aboard the Salina-powered Lubbock Wrecker Service/Rebein Bangerter Attorneys at Law No. 11x Maxim.
Peebles settled for the runner-up slot, his strongest ASCS outing to date, with Mike Peters claiming the show position. Nick Haygood raced from 14th to finish fourth, with Derek Drown rounding out the top five.
Miller crossed the stripe sixth, with Taylor the final car on the lead lap in seventh. Current series point leader Keith Rauch advanced from 19th to eighth, with John Blurton and 18th-starter Joe McCarthy completing the top ten.
Miller, Peters, Dennis Park and Peebles topped heat race action for the stout 34-car field, with Jason Martin winning the 15-lap B Main.
