Herrera Completes ASCS Rocky Mountain Sweep at Aztec
AZTEC, N.M. (September 15, 2007) -- For the second year in a row, Albuquerque's Johnny Herrera completed a sweep of the American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region's two-night stand at Aztec Speedway by winning Saturday night's 30-lap feature event.
But this time around, Herrera got a friendly nod from Lady Luck, as he regained the point on the final lap when race leader Lorne Wofford popped a right rear tire with an apparent first career ASCS win within his reach.
While Herrera took the victory, C.J. Johnson was crowned the seventh different ASCS Rocky Mountain Region champion in as many years.
With Herrera starting the feature from the third position, it was Pole Dash winner Jason Martin gunning into the lead at the outset and pacing the opening dozen circuits.
Martin's early pace was interrupted after three rounds when the caution flew for a Ricky Montgomery spin. On the ensuing restart, Johnson got tangled up with Patrick Bourke and flipped. While done for the night and credited with a 20th place finish, Johnson still claimed the title by a 50-point margin.
Back under way, Martin set the pace until Herrera raced into the lead. Herrera led the way until Alamogordo's Wofford took over on the 20th round and set his sights on victory lane.
Wofford's charge came up less than a lap short of the checkered flag however, with Herrera streaking by when Wofford's tire gave way. Keith Rauch chased Herrera across the line to secure second in series points, with Martin, Bourke and Nick Haygood rounding out the top five in the season championship feature event.
Gary Taylor was sixth, with 20th-starter Dustin Hall, Joe McCarthy, Colt Treham and Wofford completing the top ten.
Rauch, Haygood and Treham topped heat race action with Bo Baker and Bob Schaeffer winning the twin "B" Mains.
