Taylor's ASCS Rocky Mountain Title Hopes Alive with Rapid City Win
RAPID CITY, S.D. (September 16, 2005) -- With the American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region championship hanging in the balance, Gary Taylor stepped up to the plate to top Friday night's hotly-contested 25-lap feature at Black Hills Speedway.
In an event that featured a handful of lead changes, Taylor took command for good on the 21st round en route to capturing his second series victory of the year. Entering the night 28 points out of the lead in the series championship points race, Taylor closed to within just two points of Eric Miller, who could only muster a 13th place finish Friday night. Only Saturday night's go at Gillette Thunder Speedway remains to determine the champion.
Paxton Lambrecht gunned into the lead at the drop of the green flag in the feature, only to surrender the point on the second round to former series champion Randi Miller. Miller set the pace until succumbing to Josh Ostermiller on the 15th circuit.
Ostermiller led for just three rounds before Taylor battled into the lead. Ostermiller fought back three laps later however to recapture the point. Ostermiller held the lead for just one more lap before Taylor charged back into the lead for keeps aboard Harry and Louise Conklin's Wesmar-powered Hi-Strength Bolt/R&L Enterprises No. 5d Eagle.
Taylor raced underneath the checkered flag in front of Ned Powers, with R. Miller, Brent Kronfuss and Ostermiller rounding out a tightly bunched top five.
Darrell Brink crossed the stripe sixth, with Jake Pierson, Jeremy McCune, 17th-starter Phil Dietz and Shane Liebig completing the top ten.
