This event marks the first time that the USAC Midgets will have competed in Portland. USAC is in it's 46th year of professional auto racing and continues to offer the most diversified schedule of events each year. USAC currently conducts nine professional racing divisions that compete throughout the country including the Coors Light Silver Bullet Series and the Worldcom Western Midget Car Series. In addition, USAC serves as the host nation organizing club for the U.S. Grand Prix at Indianapolis that presents Formula One racing.

The USAC Worldcom Western Midget Car Series competes in 27 events at 14 different tracks in seven states. So far this season there have been six different winners in nine events. The Portland event will bring the USAC Midgets to the Northwest for the first time. "We're excited about coming to Portland," Said Tommy Hunt, USAC Vice President Western Operations. "This race brings our program to a new market and will help grow the series."

Making they're return to the half-mile clay oval of Portland Speedway will be the hy-per-lube Northern Sprint Tour for there second appearance of the season. The NST features the most successful woman auto racer in the country, Shawna Wilskey. Wilskey of Lake Stevens, Wash. is the three-time and defending NST Sprint Car champion. Jayme Barnes of Everett, Wash. won last time out (5/12/01) in Portland and looks to repeat. The third generation driver liked the Portland clay, "The track was fast," Barnes said. "You had to be able to move high or low and I am looking forward to coming back."

Both the Worldcom Midget and NST Sprint Car are open wheel cars. The Midgets will run without wings, while the Sprint Car will have a 25 square foot wing. Both cars need to be push started, as they have no on-board starters. The Midget utilizes a 4-cylinder motor, while the NST Sprinter supplies power to the tires through a 360 cubic inch 8-cylinder motor.

"We are delighted to have the Worldcom Western Midget Car Series and the hy-per-lube Northern Sprint Tour headline our 18th annual Open Wheel Spectacular," said Craig Armstrong, Portland Speedway Promoter. "This year's event will be a show that area race will not want to miss."
