Mark Smith Wins 6th Sprint Car Main
Campbell/Beward on Top in Stock Cars
Port Royal, PA Mark Smith is on a roll at Port Royal, PA Speedway. Smith won the 25 lap Aumiller & Associate Sprint Car feature for the sixth time Saturday June 19 at the Juniata County oval. Smith led only the final lap, and earned $ 2,500 dollars. The winner said, " We've had every kind of track condition over the last four weeks and we've managed to win. That speaks well for my team. Normally a track like tonight will gum a rear tire but ours looks pretty good." Smith referred to the dry slick surface that looked much like a daylight track due to stiff winds that persisted through the night.
Jimmy Seger of Morrisdale started second and led the first four laps before being passed by newcomer Kevin Nouse driving the Pete's Bridge Street Motors no. 25. Most felt Nouse was headed to his first career win at Port Royal. Nouse opened big leads during green flag runs. When it seemed the race outcome was decided, Smith closed the gap dramatically and got by on the final lap to record the win. " I would get tight on long runs", Smith began, " I needed to get the car to turn in the middle of the corner. I kept changing my line and I finally made it there at the end." Owner John Zemaitis stated after the race, " without a doubt, this is the best race team I've ever had. We didn't expect to win this many races this early." Nouse finished second with Mike Erdley third in the Lisi Shell no. 11. Erdley started ninth. Rick Lafferty drove the Clugston Lumber Company no. 0 to a fourth place finish. Seger had his best performance of the year to finish fifth. Sixth through tenth were Keith Kauffman, Craig Keel, Lucas Wolfe, Justin Seigler and Todd Shaffer. Heats for the 22 car field were won by Dave Hahn and Shaffer.
The race was under caution just two times. Len Thompson stopped on the inside of turn four with nine laps complete. Thompson was through for the night. With seventeen laps scored, Chad Layton dropped out after his cars drive line broke.
Steve Campbell of Sunbury won the 20 lap Ramsey's Car Wash/AB Auto Glass feature worth $ 1,000 dollars. Campbell started second and led every lap. Nick Dickson stayed close to Campbell during the opening stages of the event. Jere Wierman chased Campbell from the mid point of the race until the end but could not get by. It was Campbell's third win of the season and increased his point lead over Scotty Haus, who was absent from the program. Campbell said, " We pride ourselves on the points. We try to do well and we like coming here to race." Jeff Leiphart finished third behind Campbell and Wierman. Eric Kauffman was fourth with Tim Gray fifth. Sixth through tenth were Scott Flickinger, Randy Hoffman, Travis Dillman, Nick Dickson and Jeff Bryner. Campbell and Kauffman won qualifiers. There were 18 cars.
Gary Beward won his second Stong's Auto Parts Pro Stock feature of the season over Bill Powell. Beward dominated the event leading every lap. John Heane was third with Todd Snook fourth. Steve Stitt was fifth. Sixth through tenth were Harold Ranck, Neil Foust, Corey Kepner, Jason Davis and Mark Auker. Tim Krape and Josh Brown won heat races. There were 23 cars.
