11th Annual CARQUEST Sprint Speed Week Series Visits Port Royal
Port Royal, Pa, 6/23/01 - For just the fifth time in the series 11-year existence, Pennsylvania Sprint Speed Week rolls into the Port Royal Speedway on June 30. $5,000 awaits the winner of Saturday night's 30-lap speed week feature, which is accompanied by the tracks pro stock division.
Sponsored by CARQUEST Auto Parts of Armonk, N.Y., the 11th Annual CARQUEST Sprint Speed Week series boasts eight nights of racing in a span of just eleven days. The Port Royal date will be the sixth leg of the series, which kicked off at Lincoln Speedway on June 23 and concludes at Susquehanna Speedway on July 3.
All told, total prize moneys for the week exceed $165,000 and all of Central Pennsylvania's finest are expected to follow the series, including six-time and defending series champion, Fred Rahmer of Salfordville. Others expected to compete include two-time champ Lance Dewease and one-time king Keith Kauffman along with Todd Shaffer, Greg Hodnett, Don Kreitz Jr. and many more.
Sinking Spring's Kreitz was the winner of the 2000 Port Royal speed week date, besting Kauffman, Tyler Walker, Rahmer and Skip Jackson. Other Port winners include Jeff Shepard in 1998 and Dewease in 1999 with the 1997 date falling to rain.
The 2001 Port Royal version also carries sponsorship from Tri-Star Racewear of Salisbury, N.C. Compliments of Tri-Star, both the sprint and pro stock feature winners will receive customized, fire-retardant, Nomex race suits, valued at $1,000.
Time trials for Saturday night's program are slated for 7 p.m. An autograph session with speed week champs Fred Rahmer (1992, 93, 94, 95, 98, 2000), Lance Dewease (1997, 99), and Keith Kauffman (1996), gets underway behind the new grandstand at 5:15.
