Keith Kauffman win CarQuest Speedweek Show at Port Royal.
Parks tops Pro Stocks.
Port Royal, PA Keith Kauffman won the 30 lap Carquest Auto Parts/Aumiller's Insurance Sprint Car feature Saturday night July 6 at Port Royal Speedway. Kauffman started second and drove the Middleswarth Potato Chips No.7 straight to the front and never looked back for a convincing win worth $ 5,000 dollars. Don Kreitz started sixth and finished second. Sean Michael, Greg Hodnett and Todd Hestor followed. Completing the top ten were Lance DeWease who suffered a broken header, Alan Cole, Mike Erdley, Shawn Keen and Fred Rahmer. Heats for the series high 37 cars were won by DeWease, Hodnett, Rick Lafferty and Michael. Todd Hestor won the B-Main while Kreitz set fast time.
Kauffman led every lap. Several cautions slowed the field. The first came with four laps scored when Troy Whitesel of Selinsgrove, PA went to the infield pit area. Whitesel later rejoined the filed at the rear and would finish in nineteenth spot. While under the same caution Millerstown's Todd Shaffer went to the pit area and would also return to action. Upon restarting Kauffman enjoyed a long green flag run lapping cars at will. A major challenge was set to unfold when Kauffman came up on Shaffer and Mark Smith who were racing for position as Kauffman attempted to put them both a lap down. Kreitz and Greg Hodnett who was running in third spot at the time bore down on Kauffman and it appeared a wild finish could be in store as the trio prepared to race through lapped traffic. The yellow light came back on for a rash of flat tires on lap twenty one clearing the traffic in front of the race leader. Smith, Von McGee and Mark Coldren all changed tires under yellow and returned to the rear of the field. With a clear track Kauffman appeared home free while Kreitz continued to chase the all time leading Port Royal winner. One final challenge came when a lapped car stumbled in front of the leaders on the final lap but Kauffman stayed out front to pick up the win. The happy winner repeated a season long message to Race Director Tom Little in victory lane.
"I keep saying we have a good race team. I hope you fans keep buying chips because I've tore up a lot of cars this year. We've been good all week. We finally won." Owner Dave Middleswarth happily stated, He's(Kauffman), my man."
The 15 lap Stong's Auto Parts Pro Stock race was the best of the season at the Juniata County oval. Todd Snook got by Matt Parks coming off turn four on the final lap as they and Jason Schmidt battled to the finish line. It was a heart breaking loss for Parks who started second and led every lap until the final turn. The top three cars raced under a blanket the whole way in an exciting finish which Snook described in victory lane. He, (Parks) got in too deep entering turn three on the final lap. I got a good run coming off and was able to beat him back to the finish line."
Following Snook, Parks and Schmidt was Corey Kepner and Bill Powell. Completing the top ten were Glenn Miller, Terry Naugle, Eric Cauffman, Gary BeWard and Mark Auker. Heats were won by Kepner and Donnie Hughes. There were twenty cars.
