Port Royal,PA It wasn't pretty, but it sure was exciting. When it was over, Mifflintown's Keith Kauffman won the 25 lap Sprint Car feature Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway. For Kauffman, it was his 101st Sprint Car win at the Juniata County oval and paid $ 2,200.00.

Lenny Thompson of Macungie led the first lap with Kauffman second. The first of many cautions came on lap two when George Kulp spun his racer. Upon restarting the red flag came out for Mike Erdley who flipped on the frontstretch. Erdley was transported to Lewistown Hospital for observation. Kauffman took over the lead on lap four with Thompson giving chase. The red lights came on for Sean Michael on lap five when he jumped the cushion and flipped the Zemco Sprinter in turn one. Michael was not hurt. The race resumed and Lance DeWease stopped on lap six while running seventh. For DeWease it was a tough evening, having made contact with the wall earlier in the event. Bob Beidelman and Chris Strait got together in turn one for yet another yellow and many persons in attendance wondered when the marathon would end. The race resumed with Kauffman leading and Thompson giving chase through lapped traffic. With two laps left Thompson grabbed the lead in lapped traffic and the pair race wheel to wheel the rest of the way. Kauffman was not to be denied as he ran across the finish line to earn the win. A scary moment occurred when Thompson demolished his sprinter in turn one after making contact with Shawn Stidfole. Both drivers flipped violently with Thompson's car punching a hole in the turn one tin wall. Both drivers were ok but Thompson was visibly shaken. Following Kauffman and Thompson was Todd Shaffer in third. Brook Weibley and Shawn Keen completed the top five. Sixth thru tenth were Alan Cole, Mark Smith, Mike Wagner, Shawn Stidfole and Rod Stroup. Heats for the thirty car field went to Smith, DeWease and Erdley. Kevin Scheaffer won the consy.

Kenny Dickson won the 20 lap Late Model feature which paid $ 1,000 dollars. It was his 47th career win at the Port Royal oval. The race was exciting with four cars running under a blanket most of the event.

Tony Adams of Sunbury led the first 13 laps before Jeff Bryner took over. The pair had Ford and Mopar fans excited as they ran up front. Adams evening ended early when something broke in turn 3 and he hit the wall. A flash fire broke out under the hood which was quickly extinguished. Adams was then pushed to the pit area. Bryner restarted with Dickson, Steve Campbell and Tim Wilson in hot pursuit. Dickson got the lead with two laps left and went on to win the show. Bryner finished second with Campbell third. Wilson and Jere Weirman completed the top five. Sixth through tenth were Mike Lupfer, Scott Flickinger, Eric Kauffman, Chris Wilkinson and Steve Earnest. Mike Lupfer and Dickson won heats. There were 17 cars.

Corey Kepner of Mifflintown won the 12 lap Stong's Auto Parts Pro Stock event over Jim Palm. The pair waged an exciting and close battle before Kepner collected his ninth career win. Matt Parks, Jason Schmidt and Scott Bargo completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Peanut Heintzelman, Glenn Miller, Don Hughes, Mark Auker and Mitch Miller. Heats for the 19 cars went to Hughes and Heintzelman who set a new 5 lap track record in his heat at 2:07.953 seconds eclipsing a record held by Brian Henry since 03/25/00.

The Speedway returns to action next Saturday April 21 at 7 P.M. Scheduled are the Sprint Cars, Gray's Auto Parts Late Models and Stong's Auto Parts Pro Stocks. The World of Outlaws Gumout show is scheduled for April 28. Speedway officials are evaluating construction progress on the new grandstand and will issue a statement shortly on this event.
