January 25, 2004, Port Royal, PA - Champions were crowned Saturday night January 24 at the Port Royal Speedway Awards Banquet. Todd Shaffer won the Aumiller & Associate Sprint Car Championship. Scotty Haus took the AB Auto Glass/Ramsey's Car Wash Late Model Award, Todd Snook earned the Stong's Auto Parts Pro Stock title and Butch Renninger was presented the Pizza & Sub Shack Enduro Championship. Nikki Dalton received the Zimmerman's Truck Line Powder Puff award.
The event was held at J C Entertainment Center in Mifflintown. Awards were handed out by President Tom Little. Craig Rutherford was Master of Ceremonies. Mel Thomas entertained the crowd with music.
Special Awards were presented by Little to Mike Wagner for Sportsmanship, and Kevin Scheaffer for Hard Luck in the Sprint Car division. The Sprint Car Rookie of the Year was Adrian Sheaffer. Late Model Award winners were Jere Wierman for Sportsmanship, and Dave Kepner for Hard Luck. Nick Dickson was named Rookie of the Year.
Fair Board members Joann Heckert and Craig Rutherford were presented Leadership awards by President Little. Also recognized was Janet and Gene Wyland for their help with the winter car shows and novelty stand. Media Awards were given to WJUN Racing Round Up personality "Cowboy Teen" Little and morning man Mel Thomas for their help promoting the speedway.
Appreciation Awards went to Fred Dalton, The Port Royal Ambulance League and Mifflin Fire Company.
Little inforrmed all that racing will start Saturday March 20 with a practice session from noon til 4 p.m. Night racing starts March 27 at 6 p.m. Aumiller & Associate Sprint Cars, Stong's Auto Parts Pro Stocks, and 4 Cylinder Stock Cars will make up the seasons first program. The Altoona Curve Mascot, "Steamer" will be on hand to greet fans. The Curve is the AA baseball affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Curve and Port Royal Speedway will cross promote each others events during 2004.
