Late Model Championship/New Grandstand Opening on tap at Port Royal May 26.

5/22/01, Port Royal - The late model stock cars will take center stage over the upcoming holiday weekend at Port Royal Speedway. Sponsored by Beer and Soda City of Burnham, the wide-body late models will compete in a 30-lap championship event, paying $1,500 to the winner and $125 to take the green flag. The late models will be joined on the May 26 racing card by the sprint cars and pro stocks, getting underway at 7 p.m.

An autograph session with sprint car drivers Mark Smith and Kevin Schaeffer, and stock car pilots Ken Dickson, Jere Wierman, Corey Kepner and Gary Beward is also on tap and gets underway behind the new grandstand at 5:30 p.m. Speedway officials hope to officially open the new, 3,100-seat structure on Saturday night in a ceremony presided over by State Representative Dan Clark, whom was instrumental in securing state funds to obtain the new structure.
