Gordy Button $2,008 ASCS Patriot Winner at Cayuga County

WEEDSPORT, NY (October 10, 2008)- Gordy Button might not have had the best car on Friday night at Cayuga County, but he made all of the correct moves throughout the night and took full advantage of his opportunities to put his car in Victory Lane.

Button, of Kirkville, NY, picked up his second ASCS Patriot win of the season and his third career victory at Cayuga County by leading all 25 laps in dramatic to score the $2,008 top prize.

With 52 cars on hand, the long-time sprint car competitor found himself on the pole for the A-Main, a position he would have to fend off Rick Wilson for during most of the event.

"Starting up front definitely helped us tonight," stated the pilot of the No. 714 in Victory Lane. "To be honest, I'm worn out right now."

After losing the battle into turn one on the initial green flag, Button caught a break when Michael Carber stopped in turn 1 before a lap was ever completed. Then on lap eight, just as he was moving into lapped traffic, Wilson passed Button for the lead down the backstretch; before the lap would be completed though the caution flag would fly for Trevor Lewis and put Button back in front.

"Ricky got me one time but I was saved by the caution. When I had clean air we were really good and that helped us stay in front."

As the race moved into the second half, Button and Wilson would again hit lapped traffic. As the bottom of the track started coming in, the No. 42w again pulled even for the lead, but the traffic would slow up Wilson and again hand the lead back to Button, this time for good.

A final caution flew on lap 19 for Chris Coyle, who had charged his way up to second, when his right front tire was cut down and force him to stop. Under that caution period, it became apparent that Wilson had his right rear shocked dislodged. Those mechanical problems, coupled with the final six laps free of lapped traffic, would be the recipe to put "Panic" in the winner's circle.

Button became the third driver to win multiple ASCS Patriot A-Mains this season. It was his first win at CCFS since 1986, when the track had no outside walls and the facility was known as "Weedsport". It is a place that has been special to him for years.

"This is one of the first tracks I ever raced at. I drove here back when I was 15 years old."

Wilson's second-place run was his sixth-straight top-five at Cayuga County. His run was also good enough to earn him a share of the Inagural Walton's Farm and Auto Repair Hard Charger of Central New York. The driver Wilson would share that award with was Bobby Breen, who finished in third.

Breen charged up from his 10th place starting spot for his best career run at CCFS. The finish was good enough to also earn him a runner-up finish in the A-Verdi King of CNY Standings, as well as a tie for fifth in the overall 2008 standings.

Bryan Howland did not have one of his best nights, finishing in 12th, but he was solid enough to wrap up all three components of the "ASCS Patriot Triple Crown". He easily wrapped up his second career ASCS Patriot Championship, his first A-Verdi King of CNY Crown, which was adorned on his head as he did a wing dance) and the Hard Charger of the Season.

Mark Bitner and Robbie Stillwaggon were among the 15 drivers to make their first Patriot start of the year. They were both strong all night long, charging up to complete the top-five. eff Cook was also on the move, driving from 15th to sixth. Young David Gravel was seventh ahead of Shawn Donath, who made his first sprint start in more than two years in Doug Emery's No. 33.

Steve Poirier was the KSE Hard Charger of the Night, coming from the B-Main to finish in ninth. Tommy Wickham would round out the top-10.

Among those that had strong runs ruined in the A-Main were Jared Zimbardi and Trevor Lewis, who both fell out while running in sixth place. Josh Weller was in third place when he smacked the inside barrier with his left front wheel on a restart.

Past Cayuga County Winners and ASCS Patriot Champions Chuck Hebing and George Suprick had terrible luck on the night, as Hebing blew up his new engine of his No. 28 an Suprick found himself in the back of loaded heats and B-Mains and failed to duplicate his CCFS win from back in July.

The 52 cars that packed the Cayuga County pits full easily set a record for most cars to run a full-point Patriot Show. Six states and two provinces were represented, including ASCS Rebel Champ Kenny Adams traveling up from Malabar, FL.
